Assassin’s Creed Mirage, developed by Ubisoft Bordeaux and published by Ubisoft, is the upcoming thirteenth installment in the Assassin’s Creed series. Scheduled for release on October 5, 2023, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, with an iOS release in early 2024, this action-adventure game shifts the focus back to linear storytelling and stealth gameplay, departing from the recent emphasis on role-playing elements.
Set in 9th-century Baghdad during the anarchy at Samarra, Mirage follows the journey of Basim Ibn Ishaq, a character introduced in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, as he evolves from a street thief into a member of the Assassin Brotherhood. Players will engage in parkour, close-quarter combat, and stealth gameplay, reminiscent of earlier titles in the series.
The game introduces the “Assassin Focus” ability, allowing players to eliminate multiple enemies simultaneously by marking targets during stealth assassinations. Additionally, new features include various poles for crossing gaps and improved mobility animations. Mirage offers a smaller campaign, lasting 15-20 hours, designed to celebrate the series’ 15th anniversary. The game also includes an educational database on 9th-century Abbasid culture in Baghdad.
Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be released on multiple platforms, including iOS, and is available to Ubisoft+ subscribers on day one. It features an exclusive mission for pre-order customers and cosmetic microtransactions, including a Prince of Persia-inspired pack for additional weapons and cosmetic items. Ubisoft confirmed no post-launch downloadable content plans for the game.
Assassin’s Creed celebrates its 15-year anniversary with a presentable tale of stealth & stab, set against the backdrop of a beautifully realized Baghdad. Unfortunately, in returning to its roots, Mirage casts an unwelcome spotlight on the series’ dated mechanics, signaling a need for evolution. For the franchise faithful, however, Assassin’s Creed Mirage remains a fine adventure offered at an agreeable price.
