The 
Black Lake or Great Lake (the sitting Headmaster vainly prefers the prior) is an expanse of fresh water south of the castle. The lake’s murky depths are home to merpeople, Grindylows, and other magical, aquatic beasts and beings, including the giant squid – a surprisingly friendly cephalopod with a fondness for toast.
