Pikmin is an action strategy game from Nintendo that, while appearing cute and delightful on its cover, is actually a brutally tricky game that can be explored and challenged to a truly high standard.
While searching for a planet with a large food supply three explorers from the planet Koppai find themselves stranded on a planet after their landing sequence goes horribly wrong.
Separated and short on food the three captains soon enlist the help of the titular Pikmin, obedient troops that will fight, and if need be die, to help the heroes accrue food and find a way off the planet.
Pikmin is played on a day by day system. Each day lasts a limited amount of time, and you must do as much in each day as you can.
Be it beating bosses, finding fruit, harvesting enemy corpses for Pikmin, you must decide what you need to do, when, and then work out how to overcome the David and Goliath situations that present themselves.
For those that have played every entry in the series to date, Pikmin 3 falls closer to Pikmin 1 in terms of style.
It’s also unbelievably cute.
Ultimately Pikmin is a game you can enjoy at a leisurely stroll, taking holiday snaps as you waddle around the areas.
Or it’s a game you can push to the limit, trying to find cunning new ways to annihilate bosses in speedy, previously unforeseen ways.
This guide sways more towards the latter.
