The character and item upgrade screens.

Every time you kill an enemy or crush a collectable soul (of any size); you’ll earn even more souls. You can spend these souls buying equipment (such as armor or weapons) but their primary function is to allow your character to grow stronger by levelling up (your character and your equipment).

You need to speak to the Emerald Herald (the lady who stands near the bonfire in Majula ) to level up your character and she’ll allow you to spend your souls on improving your different stats.

What you’ll notice is that each new soul level will cost a set amount of souls and the next one will cost slightly more souls. So for example, going from level 104 to 105 costs 14,987 souls, whilst going from 105 - 106 costs 15,241 (an increase of 254 souls).

You can see how many souls you need to increase to the next level before you commit your souls so it’s a very wise idea to check out every possible stat and how much you’ll get out of it (as remember - most stats have soft and hard caps on their best areas).

Levelling up Equipment¶

Whilst levelling up your character makes them better fighters/magicians is vital; upgrading your weapons and armor is equally important (especially when it comes to things like poison/bleed resistance etc). To level up your gear you first need to find some upgrade materials and then take it to a blacksmith to upgrade (like the one in Majula).

Here’s a list of the different materials you can find and the maximum they’ll upgrade any item to:

• Titanite Shard: Upgrades equipment from +1 to +3
• Large Titanite Shard: Upgrades equipment +4 to +6
• Titanite Chunk: Upgrades equipment from +7 to +9
• Titanite Slab: Upgrades equipment to +10
• Twinkling Titanite: Upgrades unique weapons and armor to +5
• Petrified Dragon Bone: Upgrades boss equipment to +5
• Fire Seed: Upgrades Pyromancy Flames to +10
  Whilst you can find materials lying around the game world; you can also buy a limited number of shards/chunks/slabs etc from certain traders (the merchant in Harvest Valley being an excellent example).
