After the down-right disappointing use of StreetPass in Pokémon X and Y, finally it’s put to good - and sensible - use in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.
For the uninformed, StreetPass is a form of automatic, mid-range communication between two 3DS/2DS consoles. Unless it has been disabled or your wireless switch (the blinking yellow light on the side) is off, StreetPass is always active whenever your 3DS/2DS is powered on or in sleep mode.
How to StreetPass¶
Even when StreetPass is possible, to actually benefit from it, you you must first activate StreetPass functionality within Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire itself. This can be done after receiving the BuzzNav upgrade for your PokéNav Plus from the Devon Corp. president in Rustboro City.
Next, open up the BuzzNav app itself on the bottom screen and press the curious icon in the top-right corner to receive the option to enable StreetPass or not.
Now there are no benefits to not enabling StreetPass, but do be aware that your trainer name, party members and certain activties may be shared with other players. So if you’re sensitive about sharing such information, feel free to decline.
Checking for StreetPass¶
Assuming you’ve enabled StreetPass, all you have to do now is wait until you StreetPass or “tag” another 3DS/2DS player who has also registered StreetPass for either of these two games. This is more easily done in busy areas and much harder if you’re simply sitting at home.
You’ll know when you’ve successfully tagged another player when there’s a distinctive green light at the top-right corner of your 3DS/2DS console. However this may not necessarily result in an Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire StreetPass, especially if the person hasn’t played the game.
To find out, you can check your Notifications , along the top of your 3DS/2DS’s Home screen. Alternatively, you can quickly glance at the game card icon for Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire and look to see if there’s a green circle indicator.
StreetPass Benefits¶
In X and Y, all StreetPass did was give you Poké Miles, which was honestly a bit rubbish, as it make no use of StreetPass’s major selling point, which was the sharing of player data.
Luckily things are a bit different now and you can now share the following:
- Secret Bases : Other players’ Secret Bases will appear in their corresponding Secret Spots in Hoenn. You can visit these bases to see how the players have decorated their abode, battle their Pokémon party and invite the players to your own base.
- News : In addition to the story-based news that appears in the BuzzNav, you can receive other peoples’ news, usually related to their activities. This doesn’t affect anything really, but it’s nice to see what other people have been up to.
- Mirage Spots : While soaring in Hoenn there are certain random Mirage Spots, filled with a random assortment of wild Pokémon - and one containing the Legendary Pokémon, Cresselia. Through StreetPass, you will swap Mirage Spots with other players.
The Eon Ticket¶
Furthemore, StreetPass is the only way to receive the rare Eon Ticket item, unless you were one of the lucky people who received it personally or in serial code form.
This item, when obtained, is treated as a permanent news article. From there, anybody who receives the Eon Ticket news article and checks it in their BuzzNav will be able to receive the Eon Ticket from the delivery girl in any Pokémon Centre.
