Curve Studios started life as a simple porting studio. The most famous work we did was probably on the bringing the Buzz series of quiz video games (Remember the original controller with a million wires?) over to the PSP. Working with Sony on Buzz was great, but we also wanted to expand beyond just making ports of other people’s games.
After Fluidity we had a lot of expertise in puzzle and “platform” games in the studio. Our Design Director, Jonathan “Bidds” Biddle, had been working on a game prototype of a game called Explodemon since 2005, and in 2011 we finally released that on PlayStation 3 and Windows. After that Bidds jumped straight into the game that would eventually become Stealth Inc.
Long before the launch on consoles, the game was actually a little freeware game you could download online. We had people coming to us and asking if they could donate money because they enjoyed the game so much. The freeware version was a bit rough around the edges so we never took money for that, but we did use that huge community push to justify making a full game, which was released in 2012 as Stealth Bastard Deluxe.
Since then, Curve has been expanding very quickly. In 2013, we decided to make the jump into publishing, working with other independent teams who don’t have the resources to bring a game onto a console by themselves. Our very first published title, Mike Bithell’s Thomas Was Alone, was released in 2013, and we’ve got a whole lot more to come.
