No. 1 Break The Game With EXP Share

Free experience? Yes please!

After trumping the first Gym Leader, you’ll receive the wondrous EXP Share item (classified as a Key Item) upon attempting to exit town. By default, EXP Share is turned on and enables all your Pokémon that didn’t participate in battle to gain 50% of the experience .

In previous games, EXP Share split the regular experience received between the battling Pokémon and the Pokémon with EXP Share. So if you had one Pokémon that fought and one that didn’t fight but was holding EXP Share, those Pokémon would both gain 50% of the total experience (which adds up to 100%).

Not in this game though, as your non-participants gain a flat 50% experience and your participant gains the usual 100% experience, meaning - if you have a full party - you gain 250% extra experience! Needless to say, EXP Share will make your team very overleveled, which can be a good or bad thing, but usually good if you want to blast through the main story.

No. 2 The Items You Should Sell

There’s a number of items you can find during your adventure that have no purpose to them, other than being worth more than usual to PokéMarts. So you may as well sell them at a PokéMart ASAP for a useful cash boost; for they have no real function in the game.

No. 3 Know Your Pokeball Types

There are more than Poke, Great, Ultra and Master Balls!

Required for collecting those numerous Pokémon dotted throughout the game. Pokéballs come in a variety of types and each one has it’s own particular strength/use. We’ll detail those for you below so you can use the right Pokéball at the right time (saving you from wasting too many).

Pokéball Type Special Catch Conditions
Dive Ball Use on Pokémon living underwater
Dusk Ball Use at night or in caves and dark areas
Great Ball Greater chance at catching than a regular Pokéball.
Heal Ball Fully heals caught Pokémon; useless with full party
Luxury Ball Caught Pokémon quickly get Happy
Master Ball Captures any Pokémon (perfect for Legendaries)
Nest Ball Lower-level Pokémon are easier to catch
Net Ball Use on Bug or Water-type Pokémon
Poké Ball Regular variety ball
Premier Ball Typically found by buying 10 Poké Balls at once
Quick Ball Use in first four turns
Repeat Ball Use on previously-owned species
Timer Ball Catch rate +1 for every ten turns, up to x4.0
Ultra Ball Twice as likely to make a catch as a regular ball.

No. 4 A Useful Experience Boost

To boost your Exp earning levels even higher , speak to the girl in the Coumarine Hotel (north of the Monorail Station) and if she’s happy with your friendship level she’ll give you a Lucky Egg ! Much easier than robbing one off a rare "Chansey" IconChansey.

Any Pokémon holding a Luck Egg whilst in battle will earn 2/3 more Exp than usual (so for example, 1000 Exp turns into approx. 1666 Exp). Combine this with a Level 3 Experience Point O-Power for even greater results!

No. 5 Save Often!

Saving often is the key to not losing loads of precious hours.

As blindingly obvious as it may sound; some people can, quite easily, forget to save their game at regular intervals. This can prove to be very infurtiating if you’ve just managed to capture a particularly resilient Pokémon and then you reset the game or the power goes off suddenly (if you run out of battery for example).

So always, always remember to save after every fight or significant event. If you don’t you can bet you’ll get caught out when you really don’t need to be. Sod’s law tends to be very reliable…
