Super Mario Odyssey

Our First Power Moon

By
Jarrod Garripoli

Welcome to the Cascade Kingdom, which is a lot more colorful than the Cap Kingdom, where you will be able to begin your collect-a-thon of the various items in the game. Where you begin, turn to the south and you should spot some purple coins along the cliff’s edge (3) . Well, let’s get this out of the way now before you go any further. Every kingdom in the game has a special currency that is only available there, which comes in the form of purple coins. These coins will come into play in a little bit, but they are essentially another collectible for you to find. Usually, every kingdom will have either 50 or 100 of them.

The flags are basically your checkpoints, as well as fast travels (left), Pull all the way back before letting go with the Chain Chomp (right)

After snatching those purple coins, head north and grab the checkpoint flag if you didn’t already and a little north of that will be a white hat thing. Hitting this with your cap will change it into a platform, allowing you to reach the platform there with yellow coins. Look over the ledge to the west to spot a lower area with three more purple coins (6) . Ascend the tiny hill and look over the eastern edge this time to see another three purple coins (9) , as well as some white hat platforms to allow you to get back up to the main area. There will be a Chain Chomp here, who will attack you by reeling back for a second or two and then snapping forward.

Before you do anything with him, take a dip into the waters behind him and look for a secret cave behind the waterfall for three purple coins (12) . There’s also an empty picture frame here, but you won’t be able to do anything with it for now. Head back into the waters and go back towards the Chain Chomp, making sure to stay in the waters. If you look at the little notch of land where the big glowing rock is located, you should be able to spot a small alcove underwater with three more purple coins (15) .

Return to the Chain Chomp and toss Cappy at him to possess the creature. The Chain Chomp’s only action involves you pulling back with the left stick and then letting go when you want to send the chomp flying. Luckily, some arrows will point out the trajectory of the Chain Chomp, so use that as a guide to hit the suspiciously glowing rock to reveal a Power Moon. Go on ahead and collect it to truly start your collecting adventure.
