The game has three different settings although two are only available for the first playthrough:

Easy Mode : battles are a lot easier, you will incur no penalty from escaping combat and you will regenerate health automatically between battles. The EP rewards from enemies is much greater and EP abilities themselves cost less to use. However, drops and items received are not as powerful and the best items will not be available.

Normal Mode : battles are challenging yet forgiving, escaping combat results in the time advancing one hour regardless of Chronostasis and you do not recover health between battles. You will receive standard rewards of EP after battle. Good items are available though drop rates are low for very good ones. The ultimate items are not available.

Hard Mode : This mode is only unlocked upon completing the game once. Battles can be tough and you will still incur time penalties for escaping as well as no HP regeneration. You will receive even less EP from battles as you did on Normal but all of the best items and abilities are now available, and drop rates are increased dramatically.
