Manor Lords

Deep Mining Explained

By
Craig Robinson

Deep Mining is a mechanic in Manor Lords that offers players the opportunity to create ever lasting mines for their settlements. This means an endless supply of material, which you can use to complete constructions forever. However, there is some nuance to it in the early access version of the game. Here is a closer look at what to expect and how to get the most out from deep mining development.

An infinite mine with the Deep Mine upgrade.

Deep Mining Development Explained

The Deep Mining Development is an industrial development found at the bottom of the bottom section of the tree. Follow the left path and you’ll find the deep mining development. Purchasing this development then enables you to create deep mine upgrades for rich mine deposits, further extending their quantity.

Now, there are two important things to note here:

  1. You cannot create a deep mine on regular mine patches
  2. You need to upgrade your rich mine deposit with deep mines before the resource expires.

Small mines are intentionally restrictive to force players to trade and plan around resources and developments better. Therefore, you cannot create a deep mine for small mining deposits.

The other thing you need to know is that the deep mine upgrade needs to be completed before a rich mine depletes. Deleting the mine before the upgrade completes seems to be a bug or an intentional feature. We are not quite sure which one it is. So, upgrade the rich mine to a deep mine before expiring it to unlock the permanent mining operations for your people.

You want to do this in areas with rich fields, such as iron, stone or clay. When the development is unlocked, you need to spend 50 Regional Wealth and 10 planks to begin upgrading a mine to a deep mine.

Having the development enables the deep mine upgrade, pending resources.

There are a number of benefits for doing this. Rich clay and stone are used in building projects, such as roof tiles for level 3 burgage plots, and stone is used a lot in building upgrades and in the castle editor. Meanwhile, Iron ore is used for creating tools, weapons and armor. Combining deep mines with iron ore and then getting the armor-smithing upgrades turn your settlement into an arms manufacturing town. It is one strategy to arm yourself incredibly well and make money on the arms trade at the trading post.

If you’re getting lots of clay, you can then ship that resource off via pack stations. This enables you to send off the roof tiles, which is a fairly limited resource for most regions. You can now upgrade all your burgage plots to level 3 and not worry about the roof tile resources needed to do it. It’s one example of why this is an important strategy to implement across your empire.

With that said, you now know how to manage and the best reasons to take deep mining in Manor Lords. Hopefully, these tips come useful to your expansion as you claim territory and expand upon your reasons why you want to expand your territory.
