Barroth General Information¶
You’ll first encounter a Barroth during the assignment The Best Kind of Quest, the name of which still perplexes this guide author. What starts out as an innocent escort quest and expedition into the as-of-yet unexplored Wildspire Waste turns into a fight to the death against a Barroth. After completing this assignment you’ll unlock the quest Mired in the Spire, and when you advance the capture quests from the Smart Biologist by completing Snatch the Snatcher you’ll unlock another capture quest targeting the Barroth, Landing the Landslide Wyvern. After defeating the High Rank Pukei-Pukei in the mandatory High Rank expedition to the Wildspire Waste you’ll be able to challenge a High Rank Barroth in the quest A Crown of Mud and Anger. Much later on you can get an optional quest to hunt a Barroth and a Radobaan in the quest Showdown: The Muck and the Maul.

Barroth Strengths and Weaknesses¶
Oddly enough, the only weak spots on the Barroth are the front limbs and the tail, with the former being more receptive to damage. The head, arms and legs are all breakable, while the tail is severable.
Barroth is an odd monster, who can change its elemental resistances depending on whether it’s coated in mud or not. Not only is its mud coating a defensive tool, but it’ll expel quantities of it intentionally, or during attacks, and when it runs out it may retreat to a nearby water source to wallow, re-coating itself. When coated in mud it’s resistant to Fire and weak to Water (which will remove its mud coating). When bereft of its mud coating, it’s highly vulnerable to Fire and resistant to Water. In any event, it’s always resistant to Thunder.
Unlike elements, the Barroth’s ailment resistances aren’t dependant on a mud coating. It’s highly susceptible ot Poison, Paralysis and Blast, and resistant to Stun.
Mostly a physical brute, the Barroth’s physical offense and defense should be your primary concern over elemental or status resistances, which it rarely employs. That said, there are some tricks you can make use of to make your fight easier. Bringing a Water elemental weapon will more quickly strip the Barroth of its mud coating, being afterwards much less useful, as a Fire weapon will deal greater damage to Barroth when it has lost its mud coating. A compromise is to bring a Fire elemental weapon, and collecting Watermoss on your way to the monster, thus giving you a means of dealing Water damage with your Slinger.
While the Barroth can’t inflict elemental damage directly, falling into or being covered by the mud it discharges can inflict Waterblight, which will hinder your Stamina recover. Use a Nulberry to cure yourself of this affliction if you find it necessary.
Other than that, the only thing to watch for are the swamps along the southern end of the Wildspire Waste, where the Barroth may retreat to if pressed - it’s lair is in the swamp, after all. Fighting in high water will slow you down, a hinderance which can be mitigated by equipping the Aquatic Expert skill… although this may be somewhat overkill for what is likely to be a minor nuisance, at worst.

Barroth Attacks¶
The Barroth is a mighty, armored Brute Wyvern that appears to be made of stone, and its thick hide can be further supplemented by rolling around in mud, which will deflect most attacks. While in sandy areas, you have little to worry about, but in swamps it’ll take a break from battle to roll about and improve its defense… or if hard pressed, it’ll flee to the swamps where it lairs. To get rid of this muddy coating, use water elemental weapons, or load your Slinger with Watermoss, which fortunately grows in abundance in the aforementioned swamps.
Its rocky exterior and massive, bulky body isn’t just resilient to attack, it’s also well-suited for offense, as well. While it may appear slow at a glance, the Barroth is actually rather quick in close-quarters combat, at least, it’s shifty enough that slower weapons may have trouble connecting. This is also exacerbated by its aggressiveness - expect it to attack relentlessly, and many of its attacks don’t leave much of a window for a riposte.
Common attacks include pounding its head into the ground, swiping with its head (sometimes appending a charge), side-checking into enemies on its flank, thrashing with its tail, and performing a heavy bull-rush. It should be little surprise that such a bulky foe can put enough force into its attacks to stun the unwary, especially with its charge attacks. If all that’s not enough to watch out for, it can also expel mud from it, usually with its head-pound attack, but sometimes it’ll stop and vibrate, dislodging piles of mud around itself. Coming into contact with this mud can inflict the Waterblight status, which will retard your Stamina recovery and ultimately make it harder to dodge its attacks.

The only noteable drop of any significant rarity from the Barroth is its Wyvern Gem, which, while also obtainable from many other monsters (including the Jyuratodus, Tobi-Kadachi, Paolumu, Radobaan, Diablos, Lavasioth, and Black Diablos) it’s arguably most easily obtained from Barroth or Jyuratodus, so if you must farm in, these are probably the monsters to target.
