In New World, there are several types of trade skills available to do, this is split up into Refining, and Crafting.
Refining¶
For Refining, you have five tradeskills. These are: Leatherworking, Woodworking, Stonecutting, Smelting, and Weaving. This allows you to refine your raw materials.
-
Leatherworking: Leather and tannin. Useful for Armoring, and Weaponsmithing.
-
Woodworking: Timber, and lumber. Useful for Arcana, Furnishing.
-
Stonecutting: Cut Stone blocks, and cut gems which can be socketed into Weapons and Armor. Useful for Jewelcrafting.
-
Smelting: Smelt the Ore into Ingots. Useful for Weaponsmithing, Armoring, Engineering, and Arcana.
-
Weaving: Linen, and silk. Useful for Armoring.
How to level Refining¶
Refining is a lot easier to level up than the crafts themselves as it’s simply the process of your hard work from gathering paying off. As a general rule, look to refine the highest tier of a skill wherever possible as the boost in XP will be well worth it, but so long as you’re refining everything you obtain, these Skills should eventually cap themselves naturally.
Stonecutting is a bit of an exception to this rule, as you can level it via cutting Gems. Odds are however, that you won’t come across enough of the Gems to make cutting Gems a worthwhile endeavour, instead, focus on gathering Stone from boulders and cutting Stone Blocks to get a headstart on the Skill. Once you hit 50, you can then begin to craft the necessary Expedition Keys whenever you have the ingredients, this will involve obtaining materials from the Corruption Portals, an activity you should look to partake in if the opportunity arises.
Crafting¶
For Crafting, you have seven tradeskills. These are: Weaponsmithing, Armoring, Engineering, Jewelcrafting, Arcana, Cooking, and Furnishing. This allows you to craft your Refined materials into an actual product.
-
Weaponsmithing: Melee Weapons, and Shields. Note, Spears is not part of this.
-
Armoring: Armor (all weights).
-
Engineering: Spears, Muskets, Bows, Arrows, Bullets, Gathering Tools.
-
Jewelcrafting: Jewelry and Gems.
-
Arcana: Staffs, Gauntlets, Potions.
-
Cooking: Rations, Meals, Fishing Bait.
-
Furnishing: Furniture, Wall-mounted trophies.
How to level Crafting¶
Crafting takes a lot more effort to level than any of the other Trade Skills in the game and you’ll have to go through the process of grinding specific recipies to reach new caps. Arcana and Cooking are perhaps the easiest of the two to level as you’ll want to be consistently making Potions or Food for your adventures and even just simply crafting basic ones will get you off to a great start. Engineering, likewise, can be easier than the others if you focus on crafting Arrows or Bullets as someone who uses the Musket or Bow.
Armoring and Weaponsmithing are a lot more troublesome to skill up, you won’t unlock enough recipes or have enough materials to simply level up as you go along. Instead, you’ll have to look for specific recipes that offer a nice XP/Material ration and grind it to reach certain milestones. Look around the specific crafts to see which ones are the best to go for, creating Medium or Light Armor can be a better method for Armoring than using the Forge if you have plenty of Linen. Jewelcrafting remains the toughest Skill to level in the game, it’s a slow process and you can only really level it via the different jewelry you can craft in the game. These all need plenty of tough resources so you may have to wait until you have means to a lot of Gold and look to purchase a lot of the resources on the Trading Post.
