By

Today we’re visiting the south part of Route 1.

Pokémon Encounters - Hau oli Outskirts

Name Type(s) Location (Encounter Rate)
"Rattata" IconRattata* Dark/Normal All grass (30%, Night only)
"Slowpoke" IconSlowpoke Water/Psychic All grass (20%)
"Wingull" IconWingull Water/Flying All grass (50%)
"Yungoos" IconYungoos Normal All grass (30%, Day only)

*** indicates Alolan form.**

The next day, the doorbell will ring once more. Alright, time to go and fetch Kukui–oh wait, something’s different this time. Oh, it’s Lillie; she’s here to show you the way to Professor Kukui’s lab. As you leave, your mother will give you 30,000 Poke Dollars .

Anyway, follow the path west towards Lillie’s direction. Keep an eye out towards the wooden fence below. When the fence ends, start following the path southward. You’ll know you’re going the right way when Lillie leads you down the path. Next, you’ve got two choices.

You can either follow Lillie east or head south and jump over the ledge, where the little kid is. We’ll go east since it’s more fun that way. Before long, you’ll come across a trainer pouncing for a battle. Above him, is tall grass than you can walk through to sneak behind him and/or encounter wild Pokemon.

Youngster Kevin

Pokemon Level Type
"Grubbin" IconGrubbin 6 Bug

This should be an easy battle. "Popplio" IconPopplio can probably use Peck, while "Litten" IconLitten can use Ember. Popplio users don’t need to fear either since "Grubbin" IconGrubbin is straight out weak.

Either way, you’ll have to cut through the tall grass if you intend to continue along this path. First, make a beeline towards the north-east, where an item is sitting comfortably outside of the tall grass. Pick it up to discover it’s an Awakening . Which is useful for waking up sleeping Pokemon.

Next, you have two options again. You can follow the path free of grass around towards the south. Doing so will lead you towards a Lass who wants to battle, while avoiding wild Pokemon. Or you can head directly south from the Awakening, then turn left after passing the slope.

After that, continue in a westerly direction while hugging the wall. You’ll avoid the Lass, but may bump into wild Pokemon. Guess you can’t have them all, huh?

Lass Madison

Pokemon Level Type
"Wingull" IconWingull 6 Water/Flying

Litten users should be mindful since Ember is not very effective, while "Wingull" IconWingull’s Water Gun is super effective. If you were lucky (or persistent) and caught a "Pichu" IconPichu, Thundershock will make short work of this ‘gull. "Rowlet" IconRowlet and Popplio shouldn’t have too many issues.

In any case, after passing the Lass, your path will converge with the one where you hopped over the ledge at the very beginning. South from here is Kukui’s lab in all its glory. If you head down towards the entrance, you’ll find Lillie there.

Hidden items can often be found in suspicious spots or corners of the map.

Before continuing, if you want, head past Lillie towards the south-most part of the beach. Search this corner (by mashing the A button) to find a buried Pearl . Once you’re all done, approach Lillie to be led inside. Um, Prof, what in Alola are you doing inside…?

Inside, Kukui cheerfully greets you as always. He explains that a Pokemon called "Rotom" IconRotom lives in your Pokedex and it just so happens that he’s received some important parts that allow it to function as originally designed. Ta-da! You’ve got a walking, talking Rotom Dex !

While you’re all getting excited, Hau pops in. Now that everybody’s here, Kukui will formally explain the details about the Island Challenge. Specifically, you’re tasked with traveling the four islands of Alola, to complete the 7 island trials. For this purpose, you’ll receive the Island Challenge Amulet .

Before you can set out though, you need to learn the ropes. Even if you are an expert Pokemon trainer, you may as well pretend you’re a novice again, just to make the Prof happy. Which means a visit to the Trainer’s School! By the way, if you’re nosy, you can check Lillie’s and Kukui’s rooms.
