Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong

How to Unlock the Chatterbox Trait

By
Ben Chard

Information on how to unlock the Chatterbox Trait when playing as Galeb in the Prince’s Quarter (Scene 01) in Vampire: The Masquerade - Swansong. This is a negative Trait that is tough to avoid during a dialogue skill check.

Chatterbox is the first negative Trait in Vampire: The Masquerade - Swansong.

Unlike the other Traits you’ve been (hopefully) unlocking in Scene 01 of Vampire: The Masquerade - Swansong, this one is not a positive Trait. Indeed, this is your first taste of a negative Trait and although some can be removed, this particular one you’re stuck with if you happen to earn it (which is very easy to do).

Speaking with Berel Underwood

Once you gain control of Galeb, after completing Emem’s and Leysha’s activities, you’ll find yourself in a corridor, where Berel Underwood can be seen at the end. As you approach him, you’ll be forced into a conversation with him where you’ll be introduced to Discipline Powers in conversations.

For Galeb, that’s the Walls of the Mind Discipline that, for 2 Hunger, will raise the success rate by 50% for the next Skill defense tie, a very handy tool indeed. Also note that you can use this and if you don’t end up in a tie, you’ll have that 2 Hunger refunded, so there’s really no reason not to use it if you think there’s even a chance of a tie occurring.

Failing to defend against Berel’s question will result in the negative Chatterbox Trait.

After your first dialogue check, Berel will ask Galeb “You’re planning to introduce her to the very select club of Galeby Bazory’s progeny, aren’t you?”, at which point it will trigger a Persuasion attempt. Here, there will only be two options available to you, either you “Defend” or “Don’t defend yourself”, however you’ll need a massive 4 Persuasion to even tie with Berel, a feat you’re unlike to have at this stage of the game unless you sacrificed all of Galeb’s experience into Persuasion, and even then, you’re likely to lose the tie.

With that in mind, the outcome seems inevitable here, either fail the dialogue check or don’t defend yourself and Galeb will divulge his intentions to his progeny, earning him the negative Chatterbox Trait in the process.

What does the Chatterbox Trait do?

Now that you have this Trait, you may wonder what this actually does for Galeb. With this Trait, Galeb will have a -10% success rate in all future Intimidation ties, this means that it will be tougher to win an Intimidation dialogue check if you and your opponent are tied for the Intimidation skill. This may not seem a lot, but it certainly adds up over the course of the game with other negative Traits if you’re not careful.

There is plenty more to see and do in Scene 01, and you can access more details about in the following pages:
