Now that you know how to battle, you will need to expand your party by recruiting (befriending in-game) the Yokai around the game’s world. Some Yokai will automatically join your party during the game’s story or at the conclusion of a sidequest, but all others will require you to battle them. At the end of any battle, it is possible that one of the Yokai that you defeated will come up to you at the end and ask to join you in your adventures. The odds of this happening is completely random, but it’s possible to increase your chances to make it occur.
Every single Yokai in the game has a food that they enjoy more than any other, and at the beginning of a battle, you will have the option to give an item to one of the Yokai you are battling. As an example, Buhu likes bread and if you give it one before a battle begins, it will increase the odds of it wanting to join you after finishing the battle. Also, you might have seen a floating wisp appearing during fights. Pop it with your Target command and one of a few things will happen, one of which is an increased chance for a Yokai to join you. Lastly, there is a passive skill that some Yokai have, called Popularity, that will increase your chances.
Evolution and Fusion¶
Besides the above, you can also get new Yokai through evolution and fusion. Similar to Pokemon (if you’ve played those games), certain Yokai will be able to evolve into a stronger form once they reach a specific level (ex. Cadin can evolve into Cadable at level 21). Another feature that will get you new Yokai is fusion. Certain Yokai can be used together to form a new one, but there’s also some Yokai that can be fused with specific items to get you a new friend.
