This is a guide for the dragon-feeding minigame in Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition. Including how to feed the dragons 100 times for the “Feeding Frenzy” trophy.
Where to Find the Dragon Feeding Mini-game¶
When you’re at Viper Manor, head for the stable at the north-east side of the manor exterior. Inside the stable, the man near the top will mistake you for new stablehands–and thus, you’re roped into feeding the dragons…
There are incentives, however. The man will let you choose how many times to feed the dragon: 10, 20, 30, 40 or 100. The higher the number, the better the reward you’ll receive at the end. Also, for your first clear, you’ll receive the Manor Key.
Potential Rewards¶
Number of Times to Feed | First-time Reward |
---|---|
10 | Knee Pad |
20 | Bronze Helmet |
30 | Bronze Mail |
40 | Recover All (recommended!) |
100 | Iron Vest |
How to Play the Dragon Feeding Minigame¶
How the minigame works is that you’ll start on the left, where the dragon feed is. When you’re here, you can press the action button to pick up a maximum of 3 scoops of food.
On the right, there are 5 dragon pens, each containing a dragon that you can feed. You can press Left and Right to move to the corresponding pen.
As the stablekeep mentions, you can only feed the dragons when they want to eat. This will be indicated by the dragon flailing around with its mouth open. When a dragon’s like this, press the action button while positioned below them to shove them some food.
However, the dragon will only remain hungry for a short duration of time. If you don’t feed them in time, they will become idle again, but their color will turn increasingly red. Should you fail to feed the same dragon four times, the minigame will end in failure.
Easy Way to Feed the Dragons¶
There are two things you can do to make this minigame easier. Which you’ll probably want to do if you want to successfully feed the dragons 100 times. Or even just 40, for the Recover All.
One, there’s no penalty for attempting to feed a dragon that’s not hungry. So while you’re moving between pens, feel free to liberally spam the action button, to increase your chance of feeding a dragon that’s actually hungry.
Two, this one’s kind of cheating, but anything to make this minigame less frustating… You know how you can speed up and slow down the game? And you’re probably wondering why you’d want to slow it down… Well, if you Slow Down the game here, you get way more time to react to hungry dragons. In fact, you get so much time, you’ll probably end up twiddling your fingers a lot!
