How to Start: Talk to Maverick Johnston

(1 of 2) You’ll either find Maverick Johnston looking for talent on the street corner

You’ll either find Maverick Johnston looking for talent on the street corner (left), or within the Odeon Pictures building. (right)

You can start this quest by talking to Maverick Johnston, who sees some inexplicable charisma in you… enough that he wants to offer you an audition for a movie he’s filming. You can actually meet in him two areas - on a street corner northeast of Prosperity Plaza (northeast of the orrery and the map marker) and in the Odeon Pictures building. You’re more likely to find him in the former area if you come to Byzantium after Radio Free Monarch, while you’ll probably find him in the latter area first if you reached Byzantium via the quests Balance Due and The Puppet Masters.

However you start this quest, once you’ve agreed to become Halcyon’s next big star, head to the Odeon Pictures building (assuming you’re not already there) and ride up an elevator to the west. Go down a hallway and use an intercom near a sealed door where you’ll be told to just wing it. Real weapons, actors picked off the street with no discernible qualification besides “the right look”, and no script… what could go wrong!

(1 of 3) You can impress Maverick - and your fellow actors - by passing various dialogue checks.

Enter the room when the door opens and approach an “actor” to start your new career. No need to overthink this, really, any line of dialogue will get you through the quest, and if you flop your way through the audition you’ll complete the quest and earn 625 Bits. Maverick Johnston doesn’t seem that impressed, and the “Don’t call us, we’ll call you” response is basically the kiss of death for your burgeoning acting career. Ah well, easy come, easy go…

If you want to be a more impressive thespian, however, you can pass a variety of dialogue checks and take command of the scene, molding the scenario like so much soft putty and confounding your hapless costars. Costars? More like coasters! Because… because they just sit there and suck. Ahem. Anyways, these dialogue checks are, in order, [Lie 40], [Intelligence], [Intimidate 65], [Engineering 40] and finally [Intimidate 100]. You do not, in fact, need to pass the [Intimidate 100] check to get a positive response from Maverick, and the reward - 1,125 Bits - is the same whether you pass this last check or not.

Failing all of that, you can end the audition by picking the Attack option, which will also impress Maverick into scoring you the 1,125 Bits reward.

However you complete your audition, the quest will end and in addition to the variable amount of Bits listed above you’ll score the trophy/achievement “A Star is Born”.
