The Outer Worlds

Who Goes There?

By
Nathan Garvin
Quest Information .
Location: Groundbreaker
How to Start: Talk to Comdt. Sanita

On the Groundbreaker, head past the security checkpoint manned by Cpl. Leonard Wheeler and turn west to find another security window, through which you can talk to Comdt. Sanita, who will give you this quest. To claim the bounty on one outlaw named MacRedd you’ll need to descend to the Back Bays and bring back his lighter as proof of your deed.

Make your way to the northern end of the Promenade to find an elevator leading down the Back Bays, and once there head north to find MacRedd. You’d have to go out of your way to avoid him, so he’s not hard to find. As for killing him, unless you you Felix on your team or you pass a [Persuade 40] or [Intimidate 40] check a fight will be inevitable.

(1 of 4) The obvious way to claim the bounty on MacRedd is to kill him

Fighting MacRedd might seem like an obvious solution to two problems - you need to kill him to claim this bounty, after all, and if MacRedd’s goons are dead you can loot the rest of this deck without bother - but it’s also quite dangerous. MacRedd can be a formidable foe, as he wields the unique Montag weapon, a Shock Cannon enhanced with a Mag-2-Power mod. Why not just use a Flamethrower? Because plasma lightning is cooler! While he’s not a very sturdy opponent, he’ll be backed up by around half a dozen goons. If you pick a fight, pop off shots with TTD, then retreat behind some boxes near the elevator to heal, recover TTD and await your enemies, picking them off as they come to you. In such close quarters, a plasma-infused shotgun will work wonders. Once head dead, loot MacRedd for his aforementioned unique weapon, Montag and for MacRedd’s Lighter.

On the other hand, if you can talk your way out of a fight (or you have Felix along with you) tell MacRedd “There’s a bounty on your head. I want to claim the reward.”. It’s a purposefully ambiguous statement that gets MacRedd justifiably riled up, but you can again avoid a fight with a [Persuade 40] check, instead convincing the pyromaniac to hand over his cherished lighter. If you get him to hand over his lighter, you can pass a [Perception] check to note the lighter is engraved with the name “Sanita”, whom MacReddywill admit to having… a “carnal understanding” a few years back. Not sure whether a shroomed-up weirdo like MacRedd is trustworthy enough to take at his word, but Sanita will sure get defensive about it if you bring it up.

In any case, Sanita’s past with MacRedd doesn’t affect the outcome in any appreciable way. Whether you get the lighter through diplomacy or murder, return to Sanita to claim your reward.
