Tar Locations and Uses - Conan Exiles

By
Jessica Dillon

"Tar" iconTar is one of the building blocks of making higher-level items in !Conan Exiles. It is rather easy to make, and you can start processing it in the early game. You will need to have a stock of Tar if you wish to make a wide range of items such as "Steel Bar" iconSteel Bars, dye, Crystalline armor, and even a well for your house. The guide below goes over how to make tar, the best places to get "Hide" iconHide, and what Tar is used for.

Making Tar can be done easily through the Tannery or the Fluid Press.

How to Make Tar in Conan Exiles

Tar isn’t an item that you will find just lying around in the wild. Instead, you will need to craft it. Tar is a byproduct of creating Hide at the Tannery in the early game. For every three Hides you process, you will get one Tar. This counts for both normal and "Thick Hide" iconThick Hide processing. Once you have the Fluid Press, you can insert 25 "Coal" iconCoal to make a single piece of tar. If neither of those sounds like a good idea, then Tar can be created at the alchemy table. You can either mix five "Raw Ash" iconRaw Ash and 20 "Oil" iconOil to make Tar or ten "Resin" iconResin and Ten Raw Ash. Both of these recipes will give you two Tar, but we don’t recommend using this method as it’s costly and takes up a lot of time. Raw Ash and Oil are harder to get a hold of as they both must also be created using alchemy, and Raw Ash requires you to find "Obsidian" iconObsidian.

(1 of 3) Place bark and Hide into the Tannery to make Coal.

Best Places to Get Hide in Conan and Exiles

Hide can be obtained from hunting just about any animal in the game. Animals like Hyenas will give you normal Hide, while Rhinos will provide you with Thick Hide. Generally, you will get several pieces of Hide from one target, and if you are killing a pack of animals, you should quickly stock up on enough to make a decent chunk of Tar.

Best Places to Get Coal in Conan Exiles

Coal can be found in black rocks all over the map. This is one of the most common types of resources, and you will find it quickly after starting the game. It is usually found in large quantities as many coal nodes will spawn close together. If you just started the game, then cross the river that leads to the main part of the map, and you should see a ton around the Hyena spawns.

What Is Tar Used for in Conan Exiles?

Tar has a long list of uses in !Conan Exiles, the most popular of which is making "Steelfire" iconSteelfire. Steelfire, by mixing two Tar and one "Brimstone" iconBrimstone. can be used to make Steel Bars. You can learn more about obtaining Steelfire in our guide here. Outside of this, you will need 40 Tar to make each piece of Tarnished Iron Guardian armor, "Stone" iconStone Guardian armor, Iron Slag armor, and Crystalline Guardian armor. The Table below contains the rest of the items that you can make by using Tar.

In addition to useful items like a Water Well, you can also use Tar in alchemy to make charcoal, although this is advised against as it’s a waste of resources. You will primarily be making Steelfire with Tar, but having a Water Well, as well as dyes for cosmetic reasons, is always a nice touch to your homestead.
