Pokémon: Black & White 2

Major Changes

By
Vincent Lau

What if you’ve already played Pokémon Black and White or any of the previous games in the series? What reason is there to jump ship to Black 2 and White 2? Here are some of the big reasons:

1. New or Updated Locales

In the original Black and White, you started your Pokémon journey in south-east Unova. On this occasion, however, you’ll set off in south-west Unova and explore a variety of new locations before returning to the old locations.

It’s still Unova, but not as you know it.

Even once you return to familiar territory, you’ll notice significant changes after the two years. Furthermore, to maximise your enjoyment, Nintendo have added a bunch of new facilities offering a range of unique services.

In Pokéstar Studios , you can create your own blockbuster cinema releases by engaging in mock Pokémon battles. Join Avenue , found between Castelia City and Nimbasa City, lets you manage your own shopping mall, which will hopefully one day become a shopper’s paradise.

Meanwhile, you can flex your muscles in the Pokémon World Tournament and eventually face off against Gym Leaders and Elite Four from across the world! How awesome is that?

2. New Poster Pokémon

Just earlier we mentioned there are no new Pokémon in Black 2 and White 2. Despite being sequels, these games are still 5th generation titles, so you’ll have to wait a little longer before getting your 100+ new Pokémon.

Some people may point out the unfamiliar “new” Pokémon on the covers of Black 2 and White 2–if so, well spotted! Technically, the two Pokémon on the covers aren’t new Pokémon, but they’re new features definitely!

Black Kyurem is exclusive to Black 2, while White Kyurem is exclusive to White 2.

Back in Black and White, you could capture "Kyurem" IconKyurem , a legendary Dragon- and Ice-type Pokémon. It wasn’t very strong though, nor very important. In the sequels, Kyurem has two new Formes: Black Kyurem and White Kyurem , both with deadly, enhanced attributes. Brrr….

3. Old… ahem, Classic Pokémon

While one of the key selling points of Black and White was that all the Pokémon you encounter in Unova are brand new (so no more "Zubat" IconZubats in caves or "Tentacool" IconTentacools in the ocean), having the exact same Pokémon species in the sequels isn’t going to interest many people.

Good thing Nintendo has a vast library of Pokémon to fall back on.

Okay, so there’s no new Pokémon to add, but–hey–what about all those cool and classic Pokémon that people haven’t seen for ages? That’s right, folks, during the space of two years, some older Pokémon from as far back as Red and Blue have sneaked into Unova and are awaiting capture.

Not just regular Pokémon, but even some familiar legendaries… Oops, we’ve said too much!
