There’s a number of trainers to battle here (surprised?). The first Hiker ahead on the left side of the path isn’t looking for a fight, but the Backpacker to his north is!
Trainer Battle: Backpacker¶
Once he’s been defeated, head west over to Pokemon Breeder Irene. Yep, it’s battle time!
Trainer Battle: Pokemon Breeder¶
From there, move north-west until you reach the stairs leading to the waterside below. Move down them. You’ll find a couple of Fishermen here, as well as a Mystic Water past them both. Battle them if you want.
Trainer Battle: Fisherman (North)¶
Pokemon | Level | Type |
---|---|---|
Basculin | 17 | Water |
Trainer Battle: Fisherman (South)¶
Once you’re done here, backtrack to the main road and instead take the path north. Make sure you’re prepared for a battle before venturing forward. You’ll encounter Colress, the man who stopped you as you were leaving Castelia City.
He notes that there are some Crustle blocking the path ahead and uses it as an opportunity to make use of a machine that he’s developed which causes the Crustle to flee. Once they’ve fleed he initiates a battle!
Trainer Battle: Pokemon Trainer Colress¶
After the battle, Colress will flee himself, but not without giving you a Protein first. Now head north, down the stairs. Follow the path along to the Twins. Instead of taking them on immediately, head into the Deep Sand to their west. Turn on your Dowsing MCHN and use it to find the Red Shard hidden around here.
Once you have it, head into the small building to your north-west. Inside you’ll find a woman that will mimic a Pokemon’s cry and ask you to identify which of your party Pokemon’s cries she emulated. If you guess correctly, you receive a Poke Toy . Wonderful!
Once you have it, head back outside and head back over to the Twins. Move in front of them and they’ll ask you to battle.
Double Battle: Twins¶
Just past the twins you’ll find an intersection. Take the east path. As you follow along it, you’ll be stopped by a Lady. She thinks she can take on your almighty power?
Trainer Battle: Lady¶
Pokemon | Level | Type |
---|---|---|
Liepard | 22 | Dark |
Once she’s been enlightened, move between the gap in the buildings to the south and grab the Stardust there. Head back to the Lady and move east. Skip past the first building and enter the next one. Inside you’ll find a Youngster, keen to trade your Petilil in exchange for his Cottonee.
If you partake in the trade, the Pokemon you receive will be at Lv. 20. Once you’re done, grab the BrightPowder behind him, then leave the building. Outside you’ll find a Backpacker wandering about. You know what to do… attack her with your Pokemon, clearly.
Trainer Battle: Backpacker¶
Now head east, off the path and through the Deep Sand, to the building at the end. Enter it. Inside you’ll find a woman that, if spoken to, will fully heal your Pokemon . How convenient.
Head back outside, turn your Dowsing MCHN on and head west into the Deep Sand. Use the MCHN to find the Stardust hidden here. Once you have it, head north-west, through a small gap between two buildings to the trainer behind. Walk in front of her and the battle will begin.
Trainer Battle: Pokefan¶
Pokemon | Level | Type |
---|---|---|
Darumaka | 22 | Fire |
If it’s Monday, there will be a bird Pokemon, Braviary , just below the Pokefan. Unlike most normal Pokemon, it has its Hidden Ability , making it somewhat of a rarity. Interact with it to begin a wild Pokemon battle and try to catch it if you can!
Wild Pokemon Battle¶
Pokemon | Level | Type |
---|---|---|
Braviary | 25 | Normal/Flying |
Once more turn your Dowsing MCHN on and use it to find the Green Shard hidden to the west of the Pokefan. Move back to the Pokefan and head along the thin winding path north-east. When you reach what seems like the end of the path, head east and you’ll move behind a building.
When you come out the other side, you’ll find Light Clay for the taking. Take it then head back to where the Backpacker is walking around. Near her you should see a gap leading south. Turn on your Dowsing MCHN and move down the path. Use it to find the Yellow Shard , then head east, then south, down to the male Pokefan.
Trainer Battle: Pokefan¶
After another amazing victory, head into the nearby building. Talk to the Black Belt inside and he’ll hand you Sitrus Berry x3 . Once you have them, run back outside, backtrack to the Backpacker then all the way back to the intersection. This time take the west path and talk to the Rich Boy. He wants to show you his Pokemon.
Trainer Battle: Rich Boy¶
Pokemon | Level | Type |
---|---|---|
Herdier | 22 | Normal |
Again, turn that Dowsing MCHN on and use it to find the Hyper Potion to the Rich Boy’s north. Once it’s in your possession, head to the very western edge of the area, then head north into the Deep Sand. Move north-east across the Deep Sand until you’re past it. Here you’ll find TM28 - Dig .
Once you’ve taken it, backtrack to the intersection. Head north up the stairs and onto the proper road. You’ll see a male Backpacker walking in circles here. He’s as good as any for a battle!
Trainer Battle: Backpacker¶
That’s it for the entirety of Route 4! From here, you can head back to the house with the lady who heals you Pokemon and then choose to either take the path to the Backpacker’s west, leading to Desert Resort or the path to his right, leading to Nimbasa City via Join Avenue.
If you want to skip straight to Join Avenue or Nimbasa City, go ahead, otherwise let’s head into Desert Resort!
