There are 44 Fish to collect in Tales of Arise. These are completely optional but offer multiple Trophies/Achievements while granting you useful ingredients for Cooking.

Where to unlock Fishing¶
You’ll come across some of the Fishing Spots early in your adventure, such as the one in Calaglia and Cyslodia but it’s not until you complete the main story events in Menancia that you’ll truly unlock Fishing. Once you leave Viscint after the story events at the palace, Dohalim and Kisara will officially join the party and you’ll head out to Talka Pond Road. Once you approach the camp, you’ll find a Fishing Spot to the left and Kisara will rush over, at which point you’ll be introduced to Fishing.
How to Fish¶
The act of fishing itself is fairly simple, once you arrive at a Fishing Spot, you can press the [TRIANGLE/Y] Button to bring up your Rod and Lure selection. More importantly, you’ll find a box in the bottom right that displays what fish can be caught in this particular spot and the button commands you’ll need to press.
To make life easier for yourself, there are stronger Rods you can find or earn that will allow you to reel fish in easier. The many different Lures make it easier to catch specific fish which is displayed when selecting that Bait. In a nutshell, you want to use a Lure that corresponds to a Fish in the spot you’re at and you’ll be able to find a Lure for every fish in the game, so it you’re getting frustrated at trying to catch a particular fish, wait until you acquire the Lure for it.
Once you’re ready and know the fish you’re aim for, cast your line into an area where you can see activity and then press the corresponding buttons for that fish. Once hooked, follow the on-screen commands to drain the stamina of your fish and catch it.

There are a total of five Rods to acquire in Tales of Arise and you’ll obtain the default one, Migal’s Rod, when you gain access to fishing.

There are a total of 20 Lures to find in Tales of Arise, and they can be obtained in a number of ways such as catching new fish types, completing Sub-Quests or hidden away in Chests.
