This page contains information about the Lower Kurast area in Diablo 2: Resurrected, including details about the enemies you can encounter, their immunities, how to reach this area, and what builds/characters are most effective at farming it.
Lower Kurast is an unassuming area in Act 3 with little of any apparent significance in it. In your average playthrough, it’s mostly noteworthy because it symbolizes the end of the obnoxious jungle levels that precede it, but is otherwise not home to any quest objectives nor any Super Unique enemies. Besides a Waypoint (a feature common to all the city areas of Kurast), there’s little to recommend it. It’s not even an aLv85 area, making it a dubious candidate for farming.
The one redeeming feature of Lower Kurast - and the entire reason why it is run - is due to the number of Super Chest you can find in the area. On nearly every Lower Kurast map you’ll find a bonfire surrounded by seven torches. While insignificant on their own, there’s a hut to the northwest and another to the northeast, in the former you’ll find two Super Chests and in the latter resides a third Super Chest. What’s better than looting three Super Chests? Looting more! Lower Kurast delivers here, too, as two bonfires - hence six Super Chests - can spawn in each game.
Pop in via the Lower Kurast Waypoint, quickly search for the bonfire(s), loot the Super Chests in the nearby huts, repeat, profit. This is an excellent way to obtain gems, jewels, charms (ideally including +Skills Grand Charms) and, most importantly, runes. Up to Ber can drop from these chests, and assuming a quick clear rate, this is one of the fastest ways to obtain high runes. This is more true in singleplayer than multiplayer, as you can find a really good map (one with two bonfires relatively close to the Waypoint) and farm them as fast as you please without having to worry about a game creation cooldown between runs. Still, in multiplayer it’s fast and easy enough (especially with a Sorceress) to clear the area as part of a longer series of runs.
The only downside is that you will not be getting much in the way of unique or set items doing this (aside from whatever drops from the mobs you incidentally kill while doing this runs), so if you’re after sweet gear, you’re probably not going to find much of that doing these runs. It’s also a midgame, non-aLv85 area, which restricts what can drop here significantly. Last and surprisingly not least, it’s about the most tedious thing you can do in Diablo 2 Resurrected. If you can put up with doing more than a few dozen of these runs in isolation, you’ve got more fortitude, patience and determination than we do.
Burnout is very possible here.
How to Find Lower Kurast¶
Lower Kurast is just north of the Flayer Jungle, the first non-jungle overworld area in Act 3. A welcome sight, indeed. Fortunately there’s a Waypoint in Lower Kurast, so you should just be able to use that to return to Lower Kurast each run. As for your objective, the bonfires, Lower Kurast is laid out in a rough grid format - just teleport up and down the rows of huts until you find the bonfire you seek. After doing a few of these runs, it should become pretty easy to sniff these out, as it’s a fairly distinctive feature, even on the minimap. A Sorceress, thanks to Teleport, clears these runs faster than any other class… save for a character with [Enigma], of course.
Monster | Immunities |
---|---|
Doom Ape | Lightning |
Hell Buzzard | Fire |
Tree Lurker | Lightning |
Zakarumite | Fire |
Denizens of Lower Kurast¶
Lower Kurast is filled with critters typical of Kurast, most of which you’ve faced (or variants thereof) before. These include Doom Apes, Hell Buzzards, Tree Lurkers and Zakarumites, and while they’re not much of a threat, they are immune to fire and lightning. This would make the Blizzard Sorceress an excellent candidate to do these runs, but ideally you won’t be killing much, of anything.
Lower Kurast is an Area Level (aLv) 80 area, meaning Champion/Unique monsters can reach Monster Level (mLV) 82/83, respectively. Sadly, some high-end elite items cannot spawn here, so don’t expect much in the way of endgame unique/set drops here.
Best Characters to Farm Lower Kurast¶
Speed is what you need to farm Lower Kurast, and without [Enigma], nobody has more speed than a Sorceress. The Blizzard Sorceress is probably your best bet here, as nothing in Lower Kurast will be innately immune to cold damage, but any character who can reach the Super Chests quickly will do fine.
