This page contains information about the Ancient Tunnels in Diablo 2: Resurrected, including details about the enemies you can encounter, their immunities, how to reach this area, and what builds/characters are most effective at farming it.
Location | Champion/Unique Mobs | Special |
---|---|---|
Act 2 - Lost City | 6 - 8 | Dark Elder |
The Ancient Tunnels is an Area Level (aLv) 85 area in Diablo 2: Resurrected, which means that almost every item in the game can drop there (for more information on how drops work, check out the aptly-named page How Magic Find and Item Drops Work page). While it may not be as popular as The Pit, as it only has one level, is more difficult to reach and houses fewer champion/unique mobs, the Ancient Tunnels are still a fine place to farm some of the game’s best items due to its relatively high enemy density and lack of cold immunes.
How to Find the Ancient Tunnels¶
The good news is the area where you can find the Ancient Tunnels dungeon - the Lost City - has a Waypoint. Unfortunately, there’s no indication of where the Ancient Tunnels is located in the Lost City. You’ll find the trapdoor leading to the Ancient Tunnels near some ruins, (which hardly narrows things down much), which should be relatively free of monsters (save the ones that follow you). Given the hassle in finding the Ancient Tunnels, a Sorceress (or a character wearing [Enigma]) is recommended, as they can teleport past the mobs in the Lost City… or stop to pick them off, if it doesn’t constitute too much of a hassle. On the plus side, you can find the super unique enemy Dark Elder in some ruins in the Lost City, which can compensate for the bother of seeking out the Ancient Tunnels.
Monster | Immunities |
---|---|
Embalmed | Poison |
Horror Mage | Lightning |
Invader | Fire |
Plague Bearer | Magic |
Denizens of the Ancient Tunnels¶
Within the Ancient Tunnels you’ll find plenty of undead - three of the four native enemies are undead. Horror Mages have ranged attacks, and a decent lightning resistance will help mitigate their damage output, while the Embalmed and Plague Bearer enemies can both inflict poison damage, which can be a bit of a nuisance. Still, none of these foes are all that dangerous, with the Embalmed and Plague Bearer being decidedly slow and hence, easy to dispatch.
There are between 6 - 8 champion/unique mobs in the Ancient Tunnels and one super chest.
Best Characters to Farm the Ancient Tunnels¶
There are no native cold immunes in the Ancient Tunnels (although uniques with “Cold Enchanted” can end up cold immune), which makes this the playground of the Blizzard Sorceress. Since she’s one of the best starter magic find characters, and this is one of the best areas for her to farm, the Ancient Tunnels are a likely place for players to get their first taste of endgame loot. The Meteorb Sorceress also has an easy time clearing the Ancient Tunnels, with only the Invader enemies forcing her to put aside her potent Fireball/Meteor and use Frozen Orb. Physical damage dealers like the Summon Necromancer and Wind Druid shouldn’t have much trouble clearing this place, either, although the narrower tunnels can slow down the Summon Necromancer.
Despite an overall easy collection of enemies, it is worth noting that the Ancient Tunnels have two rare immunities: Plague Bearers are immune to magic, and Embalmed are immune to poison. This hinders the Hammerdin and Poison Necromancer, respectively, who usually have an easy time clearing areas due to immunities to their damage type being rare. Not so for the Ancient Tunnels.
