Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes

How to Find Materials to Upgrade Facilities in Three Hopes

By
Nathan Garvin

Information about how to obtain Materials in Fire Emblem Three Hopes, including information about how to obtain Materials from Surveying Spots and from the Supply Depot and Supply Master.

After a few battles in Chapter 4, you’ll be told about the Facilities Master, after which expanding facilities and finding the necessary materials for said expansion will become vitally important.

Expanding Facilities and Materials

After clearing a few Side Quests in Chapter 4, when you return to the Base Camp you’ll be pestered by one of your companions, who will tell you about expanding facilities, directing you to speak to the Facilities Master for more information. Do so and you’ll get a tutorial on expanding facilities, which is a core aspect of progression in Fire Emblem Three Hopes. Expanding facilities will give you access to new services and improve those you already have access to.

A breakdown of the various upgrades you can unlock by upgrading facilities can be found on the How to Expand Facilities in Three Hopes page. These facilities influence most aspects of gameplay, from how affordable it is to level up, what classes you have access to, what types of gifts, weapons, resources, ingredients and other goods you can buy, how effective your battalions are, how many Warrior Gauges and abilities you characters will have, what their max stats are and how easy it is to acquire gold and materials during battle.

Suffice to say, you’re going to want to keep these upgraded to keep your units in tip-top shape. To do that, you’ll need to expend both gold and Materials, and while the former is fairly mundane - fight battles and you’ll get gold - Materials are trickier to obtain. Don’t expect to be able to expand too many facilities when the feature first comes available, as your supply of Materials is finite until Chapter 5. Once you unlock the Supply Master (and consequently, the Supply Depot facility) your ability to upgrade will open up a bit, but higher-tier Materials are progress-gated - don’t expect to find Quality Building Materials and Lavish Building Materials until you’ve made significant progress in the main questline.

You can obtain Materials by clearing Side Quests and exploring Survey Spots.

How to Earn Materials from Surveying Spots

While the Supply Master will be your more reliable source of Materials in the long-term, you can also earn bulk quantities of Materials by exploring Surveying Spots on the War Map. To do this you must complete Side Quest battles, conquering regions in the process. Once the Side Quest battle in a region is complete and the region is under your control you’ll be able to examine various Surveying Spots that may be scattered about. The benefits of examining Surveying Spots vary, but they can include significant amounts of Materials. Keep in mind that some Surveying Spots cannot be explored until additional objectives are completed beyond merely conquering a region, including getting an S-Rank in that region’s battle, getting enough KOs throughout the chapter, and others.

The Supply Master

Surveying Spots may be a source of Materials, but they’re finite - once you plunder a Surveying Spot, that resource is tapped. For a more reliable, long-term source of Materials you’ll need to make use of the Supply Master, whom you’ll unlock in Chapter 5. Once her services are available, go talk to her in the Base Camp where you’ll get several options: “Deliver Equipment”, “Deliver Resources”, “Trade Smithing Stones” and “Collect Supplies”.

Deliver Equipment

You can sell excess weaponry and accessories you possess for a paltry amount of gold, or you can give it to the Supply Master for… a paltry supply of Smithing Stones. The higher-quality the weapon/accessory, the more Smithing Stones you’ll obtain. All in all, it’s not a bad way to empty out your armory.

Deliver Resources

Similar to the “Deliver Equipment” option, above, save you can exchange various resources (including excess Materials, food and ore) for Smithing Stones. Depending on your resources and inclinations, this might not be a bad way to score more Smithing Stones.

(1 of 2) You can also trade Smithing Stones at the Supply Depot to obtain Materials.

You can also trade Smithing Stones at the Supply Depot to obtain Materials. (left), If you upgrade the Supply Depot you can earn a trickle of random Materials as you battle. (right)

Trade Smithing Stones

While Smithing Stones are used to Repair, Forge and Reforge weapons (unlocking their potential and increasing their stats), they’re also a form of currency that can be traded at the Supply Depot. Smithing Stones can buy you a variety of wares, including the Materials required to expand facilities. These don’t come cheap, and you can’t obtain higher-tier Materials this way until you purchase various “Expand the Supply Line” upgrades, meaning you’ll have to obtain at least the original mid-and-high-tier Materials by other means. Despite the expense, however, this is a way to get the specific Materials you need, so if there’s a facility upgrade you really want to unlock, the Supply Master has you covered.

Collect Supplies

Initially unavailable, to unlock this you’ll need to expand the Supply Depot by unlocking the initial “Form a Supply Squad” upgrade. Once done, you’ll passively earn Materials after every battle, be they Main Quests, Side Quests, new battles, already cleared Side Quest battles in the chapter, or even battles replayed at the Record Keeper. They’re free, but you’ll only earn a trickle of them and the exact Materials earned are random - it’s a good long-term, supplemental source of Materials, but you’ll probably want to trade Smithing Stones to finish off stocks and buy the upgrades you need.
