Information about Extra Quests in Fire Emblem Three Hopes, including how to find and start them, and how they differ from both Side Quests and Main Quests.
What are Extra Quests in Fire Emblem Three Hopes?¶
Main Quest battles can be found at the end of each Chapter, and are relatively large, lengthy, complicated battles you’ll need to complete to advance to the next Chapter, while Side Quests are smaller, shorter battles you’ll need to clear to capture regions en route to the Main Quest battle in each Chapter. All Main Quests are, of course, mandatory, and most Side Quests functionally are, as well. Extra Quest, on the other hand, and truly optional, timed, small-scale battles that appear on the War Map as you conquer your way to the Chapter’s Main Quest.
When you access a new region - either by entering the World Map for the first time that Chapter, or by conquering an adjacent region - you may see some red crossed swords over a Surveying Spot. This icon indicates the presence of an Extra Quest, which you can begin by reaching the marked Surveying Spot before the timer (located near the icon) reaches zero. Every time you complete a battle the timer will decrement, so you should make reaching Extra Quests a priority.
Note that when you interact with a Surveying Spot that features an Extra Quest, you can choose between exploring said Surveying Spot, or engaging in the Extra Quest there - you’re not forced to explore or engage if you don’t want to.
Reach the location of an Extra Quest before the timer runs down and you’ll be able to engage in an Extra Quest battle. These are much like Side Quest battles, having short maps and lower S-Rank requirements, although it should be pointed out that there are no inherent bonuses for clearing them, including no First Clear Bonuses or S-Rank bonuses. Instead, these simple, optional battles allow you to deal with a straight-forward objective for extra loot, resources and XP. Arguably the most lucrative Extra Quest battles involve [Monsters], who are often the objectives of these battles. Killing them on these maps will often award you with several broken weapons, which are potentially significantly stronger than the weapons dropped by normal enemies… once they’re repaired and upgraded, anyways.
Potentially scoring some of these potent weapons are the main draw of clearing Extra Quest battles. Otherwise you do not capture regions by clearing these battles, you do not gain the usual Side Quest rewards, be it gold, Activity Points, Training Points, Strategy Points, stat-boosting items or any of the other standard fare. Given how much stronger these weapons are than anything else available, however, you’d be wise to take on any Extra Quest battles you see.
