Stray is a game about a cat that goes stray, albeit in a walled city filled with robots underground. The game takes you on an emotional journey, meeting characters, companions, and dangerous moments. It has led some to wonder if the cat dies in Stray, which is something that may upset the emotional attachements we have to animals in the medium?
Does the cat die in Stray¶
Okay, spoilers warnings. Consider it an opportunity if you want to spoil the game for yourself. If you want to know the answer, you need to click the spoiler tag below, and the answer reveals itself. If not then this is the final chance you have to find out for yourself.
The answer to the question is no. Don’t worry about an emotional moment with the cat, as the cat is fine.
However, the cat can die during the missions you play. The Zurks will begin to eat the cat over time, eventually dying it when your screen goes too red. If you catch it quick enough, you’ll see the cat flop to the sides incredibly fast as a very basic death animation. The same is said if you get caught by the Sentinel enemies, which appear during the Midtown and Jail chapters of the game. So technically, the cat can die in Stray. However, it is not lore-related deaths. So don’t worry too much about it having to break down and cry over our ginger friend. But, keep the tissues to the side just in case per the emotional story in the game.
