Monster Hunter Generations

Quest Types

By
Vincent Lau

While Monster Hunter is most well known for its varied large bosses, there’s more to the game than just that. Here we shall enlighten you with the various types of quests you’ll want to get familiar with. Some you will love, others you will hate, but all you must do if you’re a completionist!

Gathering

Gathering quests will give you a green sticker above your head.

Every area has gathering spots littered around the map. If you see a funny rock, plant, or anything else that looks conspicuously interactable, go up to inspect, and a question mark along with “A” will pop up. Press A to gather. Gathering nets you non-monster materials that are still equally important for making equipment and general use items.

To complete a gathering quest, simply make sure you gather from the proper gathering points. If the quest wants ores, mine, for example. Then deliver the items to the red box and the quest is complete. Gathering quests frequent the low star quests more so than the higher ones, but they pop up here and there.

Most quests will require that you gather up items called Account Items . Examples include Royal Rhinos, Coals, and Unique Ferns. They are useless to you, so if you are gathering to get supplies, these can easily clog up your item bag and waste gathering opportunities. But if you need to deliver these guys…well, they obviously suddenly are important. If Account Items are gathered in excess or weren’t needed in a quest, they are converted to resource points and zenny for you.

Egg (and other large item) Delivery

Large and small monsters will try to ruin your omelette quest!

This is a sub-type of gathering quests. It’s also the most annoying quest ever, seriously who invented this thing?

Eggs are a special item that will not go into your item bag like other items and then disappear into their special dimension. Instead, you have to physically hold them as you walk. They are large and cumbersome and will slow you down dramatically. Eggs are also very breakable, and if you are attacked by anything (yes this includes stings from a Bnahabra), the egg will break.

All egg delivery quests involve going to the nest, and then slowly trucking the egg back to base camp and delivering it to the red item box . As you deliver eggs, however, certain areas will become blocked off, and you will have to take the longer way around. As a result, they can easily become time consuming and annoying. To speed up the process, consider bringing along skills such as Pro Transporter and Marathon Runner .

Hunting and Slaying

This is the kind of quest that will be 90% of what you’re doing: Tracking down and hunting monsters. Sometimes they are the small fry minions, but most of the time they are the large boss class monsters you probably bought this game for. Slaying refers to small fry minions, and hunting refers to singular, larger boss monsters. These quests will give you a red sticker over your head. Red for the blood of your enemies!

Note that you can capture to end a hunt instead of kill and it still counts as a quest clear.

Capture

Use Traps and then Tranq!

These quests are a sub-type of Hunting and Slaying and will give you a gray sticker over your head. These are fairly uncommon but can be found. They start off identical to Hunting or Slaying quests: go and hunt the monster. In this case, the target is always going to be a boss class monsters. Capturing is not for small fry minions, they are not worth your valuable traps!

However, these quests can end very differently if you aren’t careful. In a Capture quest, kill = fail . 100% of the time. You can capture to end a hunt quest, but you cannot kill to end a capture quest! Check out our “Capture vs Kill” section for every nuance of a successful, easy capture.
