Monster Hunter Generations

Using Prowler Mode

By
Vincent Lau

So here’s how to use Prowler Mode. First, let’s discuss the mechanics that are different.

Instead of fainting, when you first die, Acorns are consumed. You get two acorns, then you will get carted back to base camp, giving you effectively nine lives . Get it?! NINE LIVES??? Okay? No? Okay…

Note that when you consume an acorn to come back to life, you will only have part of your health restored. But you won’t lose your health cap if it was extended via food skills. You will lose all food skills as always on your first official cart.

Similar to how hunters have a Hunting Arts gauge, Prowler Mode has a Support Move Gauge . As you attack and deal damage, it fills up. You can then use the special moves you’ve equipped earlier. Different moves will cost different portions of gauge. Some cost nothing and are perpetually free (they’re usually pretty weak or involve tossing Dung Bombs or something) and others are more expensive, but more effective. Support Moves are essentially your only items, so be sure to customize them based on what you need to do.

Controls Attack
X Basic melee attack with equipped cut/impact weapon, can be chained three times
A Basic boomerang attack, ranged. Can be chained three times. Hold and release for charged boomerang
X+A In Furr-ious mode, does a melee spam attack
R A very weak guard. But it’s there. If weapon is sheathed, uses a Support Move
R+Y If weapon is drawn, use a Support Move with this
B Dodge. This launches you forward quite a bit and has no invincibility frames
R+B Burrow underground. B will let you resurface.

You basically just want to alternate between your X and A attacks, whichever is best for the situation. Note that the last attack of the X combo will cause you to jump into the air and spin forward like a cat-wheel, which can be nice for reaching high places. It’s a long animation though! The last attack of your A combo will launch you forward slightly. Note that you can alternate between X and A for various types of three-hit combos! You can use support moves when your weapon is out which is a huge boon.

Furr-ious Mode will cause your cat to suddenly become very aggressive. It amps up your attack power but you will lose slight control over your Prowler! Your Prowler will just be determined to move forward and chase the monster. However, during Furr-ious Mode, you unlock the Furr-ious Flurry with X+A which does a lot of damage and packs quite a few hits.

If you want a cat that deals the most amount of damage possible, recruit and teach your cats the following skills/support moves: Piercing Boomerang, Boomerang Pro, and Big Boomerang.
