While your objective of rescuing Songbird from Hansen’s clutches was thwarted during the main job You Know My Name, you were able to make contact and gain plenty of invaluable information. Still, having failed in your primary objective it’s only natural that you make a second attempt, and the scheming and preparation phase for this next bite at the apple is covered on this page, which provides a walkthrough for the main job Birds With Broken Wings.
Meet Reed at The Moth¶
This quest begins immediately after you leave the Black Sapphire and part ways with Reed. The FIA agent will promise to give you a ring in a few hours, so you’ve little to do but wait for him to make good on this promise, at which point return to The Moth, descend into the safe house, and enter another round of scheming with Alex and Reed. After you’re filled in on the details of the upcoming mission, walk and talk with Alex and she’ll give you the deets on some more immediate goals - you need to head to Pacifica, find a tracking station, and use it to locate the vehicle you’ll be hijacking later. Take the gizmo Alex gives you, then leave the bunker and exit the bar.
Relic Skill Upgrade and Should You Meet with Songbird?¶
Once outside the bar, you’ll be contacted remotely by Songbird, who upgrades your relic software, giving you +3 Relic Skill Point (this will allow you to unlock the Relic Ruler achievement, assuming you’ve found all the Relic Upgrade Terminals scattered throughout Dogtown - see the link if you haven’t). She’ll also ask you to meet her southwest of the Luxor HIgh Wellness Spa fast travel terminal, and although this is optional, we suggest you take the trip to get some more backstory from Songbird, which may inform a significant choice you’ll have to make in the future. When you get to the marked location, wait until the time is between 11:00 PM and 1:00 AM, then talk to Songbird when she appears. Say whatever you will, this is just an opportunity to roleplay a bit.
How to Get the Encryption Key from the Tracking Stations¶
After your call (and optionally, meeting) with Songbird, fast travel to the Chapel fast travel station in Pacifica and head northeast to find the “Pacifica Serenity Bible Church”. The transceiver you’re looking for is on the roof of this building complex, specifically on the western edge, but it’s arguably easier and safe to go to the western end of the buildings (around the side of the building with the “El Dorado Pawn Shop” sign) to find a low section of roof you can jump onto, then work your way across to the other side of the roof. Here you’ll find a squad of Voodoo Boys gangers led by a fairly powerful Voodoo Boys Manbo. Take them out by whatever means you prefer - there are about a half dozen of them spread across two roof levels - then jack into the transceiver. After a bit of chatter with Alex, you’ll conclude that you need to find a second tracking station to accomplish your goal, and as promising as it sounds, passing the [Intelligence 15] check doesn’t allow you to skip this objective.
Next stop is in Santo Domingo, east of the Megabuilding H4 fast travel point. Head over there and you’ll likely find a gaggle of 6th Street gangers nearby. These aren’t part of the quest like the Voodoo Boys were, they’re just random spawns that usually appear near here. Kill them or ignore them, if they spawn, then get up onto the roof to find the transceiver… which is nonfunctional. You can talk to a brat named Luka, if you want, or just ignore her and jack into the transceiver, and when it ultimately fails Luka will try to sell you the solution for 1,000 €$. Pocket change, but her “help” isn’t all that useful, as she just plays hot-and-cold as you stumble around in search of the control panel you need to find. Pay Luka or not, then turn right and head to the edge of the roof, past some solar panels to find a control panel. Flip it, then head back to the transceiver and jack in to finally get the encryption key you’re after. You’ll get a text from Reed informing you of your progress, after which you’ll need to burn some time to continue with the next phase of the quest.
Should You Meet With Alex?¶
At least, the next mandatory phase of the quest. A bit after Reed contacts you, Alex will also shoot you a message, asking you to come to The Moth and hang out. Like the meeting with Songbird, this is all relationship building, even if you can’t romance any characters in Phantom Liberty. There’s no consequence to this besides learning a bit more about some of the expansion’s major NPCs, plus you get the opportunity to see the sad hand-waving that V insultingly calls dancing.
Visit Ripperdoc Farida¶
Return to The Moth and hang out with Alex or find some other way to burn time until Reed calls, instructing you to visit some shady underground ripperdoc and get some chrome. If V had an enny every time she had to do that… Anyways, head to the Golden Pacific fast travel point, and from there follow the quest trail down into the Ripperdoc’s clinic. There’s a lot of chatter here, first with Reed, then with Johnny while you’re under the knife. Say what you will and when you’re done you’ll have a new Behavioral Imprint-Sycned Faceplate installed, which takes the place of your grenade slot in your inventory and can be activated by pressing . This is mostly a mission item, but you can also use it to shed up to four stars of wanted level, but keep in mind it has a whopping 1500 second cooldown.
Leave the clinic afterward to end this job and begin the next main job, [I’ve Seen That Face Before].
