Your characters are able to use magic and special attacks in Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, through the use of Runes. Your party members will have various slots that allow them to equip these Runes, although not all of them are unlocked at the very beginning of the game. You will find new Runes in chests, as drops from enemies, and you will even be able to purchase them. However, it is a bit confusing on how to equip these Runes, which can be done at the Runes shops you find in various settlements, as well as from your Storage NPC.
Unlocking Rune Slots¶
As mentioned above, Runes are basically your skills system in Hundred Heroes. Your characters will be able to equip a variety of Runes onto them, which will grant them magic spells, as well as passive skills. The only problem is that you’re limited to the number of Runes you can equip on your characters, and some slots require a specific type of Rune. When you start the game, you only have a single Rune slot on any given character and you will need to level up the characters to unlock more slots.
You will find there are different types of Rune slots. The best kind is the slot that allows you to equip any Rune at all, but these aren’t all too common. Other types of slots include one for magic, skills, passives, and enhance. Note that some characters will automatically fill in their Runes slots with predetermined skills, so there’s nothing you can do about these. You can view the levels and types of slots from the Status screen for your characters.
Where to Equip Runes¶
With that out of the way, it can be a little confusing as to how to equip Runes, as you won’t be able to do it from the Equipment/Status menus. Some of the towns you visit will have a Rune Shop, where you can purchase some basic Runes. You’ll know there’s a Rune Shop via the four-pointed star symbol when you open your map. Simply go to any of these shops and choose the Change Runes option to allow yourself to equip Runes from your inventory onto your characters.
Outside of these shops, you are also able to equip Runes from the NPC that does your Storage (her name is Sumire). Initially, this NPC is available at the inn in Eltisweiss, but she will later move to your base, once you have unlocked that. Whenever you access the NPC, choose the Gear Prep option to be able to equip Runes on your characters.
