Nightingale

How to Avoid Rain and Hail Weather – Nightingale

By
Scott Peers

There are numerous survival games that have basic conditions which need to be met for you to stay healthy, such as being well-fed, maintaining a safe temperature, and being well-rested. Nightingale has all of this and more, but one of its unique features comes in the form of rain and hail, both of which can adversely affect you when exploring in the wild. On this page, we’ll briefly explain how you can protect yourself from the weather effects of rain and hail in Nightingale.

A lovely, sunny day in Nightingale. No umbrella required!

Weather Effects in Nightingale

One of the first things you need to understand about Nightingale is that it has three main biomes in the form of Forest, Swamp, and Desert. As you might expect, you’ll experience different types of adverse weather effects in each of these different biomes, but you’ll experience rain and hail most frequently in the Forest biome. Although these weather effects are often trivial in other survival games, in Nightingale, they can give you debuffs that impact your stats, and the hail can even kill you if you don’t protect yourself from it.

Wet, Drenched, and Hail Debuffs

So, what are these debuffs? In the table below we list exactly what each of them does.

Effect Description
Wet Your rate of stamina regeneration is reduced. Your clothes are soaked through. Though time will dry you, a fire will do so much more quickly.
Drenched Your rate of stamina regeneration is drastically reduced. Your clothes are soaked through. Though time will dry you, a fire will do so much more quickly.
Hail You are taking damage, and your equipment’s durability is depleting. Pellets of ice rain down. You, your clothing, and your equipment will not withstand it for long without shelter.

Find Shelter from the Rain and Hail

All of the above weather effects can be detrimental to your health in different ways, but hail is the only one that can kill you – albeit relatively slowly. You can easily continue adventuring when you’re Wet or Drenched, but you won’t be anywhere near as efficient with running, harvesting, or mining as you are when you’re dry, due to the diminished capacity to replenish stamina quickly. If you want to be as efficient as possible at all times, you can always find a shelter to hide under until the rain stops.

(1 of 2) Make note of abandoned structures nearby, which you can use to take shelter when rain or hail hits.

With that said, it’s important to note that hail will fall almost any time that rain falls, so you won’t be able to stay out in the storm indefinitely without taking damage. Most of the time, you’ll notice that a storm begins with a trickle of rain before getting heavier and heavier. Hail will begin to fall at some point in the middle of the sequence, then the weather will gradually change back to rain falling primarily. So long as you have somewhere to take shelter in the middle of a storm, you can survive without dying.

Use an Umbrella to Protect Yourself

Fortunately, the need to seek shelter during storms should only be a concern at the beginning of the game. It won’t be long before you can start making crafting stations, including the Simple Workbench, which can be used to craft a Simple Umbrella. The umbrella will shield you from both rain and hail so long as you have it actively equipped, which you can do by adding it to your hotbar and selecting it. You can use the umbrella alongside any one-handed tool, but you can’t use it with two-handed tools/weapons such as axes and mauls.

How to Craft a Simple Umbrella

All you need to craft the Simple Umbrella is the following:

  • x1 Wood Bundle
  • x1 Stone Block
  • x1 Hide

So long as you have the umbrella equipped, you won’t take any damage from hail, and you should be able to continue exploring during storms. You may still encounter hostile creatures or humanoids every now and then, so you’ll need to kill them quickly with two-handed weapons to minimize the time spent without an umbrella equipped. Alternatively, you can always run away if you don’t fancy fighting them while being hailed on. A final thing to note is that as you explore high-tier realms beyond the initial Abeyance realm, the frequency of adverse weather such as storms may increase, so you should always have plenty of Essence Dust ready to repair your umbrella!

Nightingale is a PvE open-world survival crafting game with a few unique features for the genre. First among these is the Realm Card system, whereby players can discover and craft Major or Minor realm cards to influence aspects of procedurally generated worlds or character attributes respectively. You may find yourself in a more forgiving or hostile world depending on the Major cards you use, but the Minor cards can give you an edge against foes with boosts to damage, health, stamina, or other aspects of survival. The game is set in the Victorian era and has more than a little influence from Steampunk fiction, so if that’s anything like your thing, you’ll love this world!
