When breeding, it’s not just the Pokémon that you can make awesome. You can also control what the Pokémon is in! If you have come all this way to make a perfect Pokémon, don’t neglect the finishing touches! The sign of a true master is your attention to detail, and the Poké Ball it ends up in is one detail you don’t want to overlook!
Females will always pass down their Poké Ball over the male if bred with a male or with a Ditto. Males will pass down their Poké Ball if bred with a Ditto. There are two exceptions to this rule.
-
If the female and male are the exact same species. Then the female’s Poké Ball and the male’s Poké Ball each have a 50/50 chance of being passed down. Those seeking to pass down Own Tempo to a fancy Rockruff can use this method if you have a female Rockruff with Own Tempo, by the way.
-
If the Pokémon was caught in a Master Ball or a Cherish Ball. The former is the ultimate Poké Ball, and the latter is for event Pokémon. If the Pokémon within these two ball types are breedable and you breed them, offspring always hatch in a standard Poké Ball. Pair with a Pokémon of the same species in a different Poké Ball to change that if you want to.
Impossi-Balls!¶
By the way, not all Pokémon can be in every type of Poké Ball. This mostly applies to Generation 7 Pokémon only given as a gift, such as the starter Pokémon, Type: Null, and Cosmog. These Pokémon cannot be caught, so they will only be in a boring old Poké Ball.
Starter Pokémon in all other generations except Alola can be in different Poké Balls thanks to Island Scan. Note that Kanto, Johto, and Unova starters are only available in Sun & Moon, and Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Kalos starters are only available in Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon (yes, you can make a Dusk Ball Protean Greninja, you edgy edgelord).
The other exceptions are Pokémon not found in Sun and Moon or HeartGold and SoulSilver and thus cannot be in an Apricorn Ball (you know, those one-time gifts you got, such as Fast Ball and Moon Ball). Porygon is an interesting case, since it was found in earlier games, but is a gift Pokémon in Sun and Moon; therefore it cannot be in a Beast Ball.
Making the Most of Your Balls¶
When it comes to using your precious one-of-a-kind Apricorn Balls to make something truly special, consider making use of Wonder Trade, GTS, and meeting others online on trade forums to collect other Pokémon in other Apricorn Balls.
Want Alolan Ninetales in a Love Ball? You could use your own, and then share Love Ball Alolan Vulpix with friends online in exchange for other Pokémon in Love Balls. Wonder Trading away Pokémon with Apricorn Balls is considered very generous, too.
