Pokémon: Ultra Sun & Moon

Big Wave Beach & Sandy Cave

By
Vincent Lau

From the cemetery entrance, follow the path west, then north-west through–or along the side of–the tall grass to get back to the main path. Back at the broken crossroad, this time turn left. You’ll arrive at one of Alola’s many motel areas. Stroll north-west along the car park, towards the second set of steps.

Grab the Super Potion lying between the truck and the motel building. After that, head up the nearby steps and enter the motel room on the right. Inside, chat to the guy sitting on the table to the left to receive 2 Nest Balls. Outside again, make your way to the south-west corner to find a slope leading down to a beach.

Before hitting the sand, catch the attention of the surfer dude staring aimlessly at the sea for a no holds barred Pokémon battle.

Santa Claus in Pokémon form shouldn’t give you any trouble. It knows only one attack, Present, which amusingly has a chance of restoring your HP, rather than deal damage. Fire-types will excel of course, but most Pokémon should do fine, so long as they’re not Bug or Grass.

After that little duel, descend the slope to the next area.

Big Wave Beach

This small beach area is brand new to Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, serving as one of the places where you can participate in the new "Mantine" IconMantine Surf mini-game. Sadly, you’re too green to be riding the waves, so we’re just here to do some quick sightseeing. Along the east side of the beach are a couple of stalls.

The first one, near the entrance, is a BP shop where you can exchange hard-earned BP for consumable items. Meanwhile the one above it is a BP shop that teaches elusive moves to Pokémon. At this point, you may not have any BP, so time to move along. Approach the bikini-clad lady by the slope just above.

She’ll happily tell you about the wonders of Mantine Surf, which you can try once you’ve beaten a kahuna, i.e. after beating Hala. From here, you can wander around the west side of the beach if you’re curious. In particular, go over to the shoreline south-west from Mantine, then position yourself just before the camera starts to swing around.

Thoroughly search the nearby sands, by hammering the A button, and you may find a buried Pearl. It can be a little tricky without anything to guide you, but thankfully you can refer to our screenshots. If successful, head due south from here, towards a surfer chatting up a woman with a sunhat.

Stand in the middle of them, or at least as close as possible without interrupting. From here, slowly walk up while searching with the A button again. After 2 or 3 paces, you should find a hidden Fresh Water. Next, head east back towards the Mantine Surf sign, then follow the beach south-east, near the ocean waves.

Along the way, there should be a big rock by the cliff side, with a palm tree above it. Search the space to its right to hunt for another sunken Pearl.

Further south-east, past the beach sand if you keep walking on the shallow water, is the Sandy Cave. However you can’t progress further in without a way to cross the water. That said, if you run around near the entrance, you can encounter some wild Pokémon.

Once you’ve done enough searching in the sand or otherwise, try to exit the beach back to Route 2 and you’ll hear a spot of commotion coming from the north. Trust Team Skull to be up to no good!

Team Skull Grunt

Pokémon Level Type
"Drowzee" IconDrowzee 9 Psychic

For your second run in with Team Skull, you’ll be facing off against the hypnotic "Drowzee" IconDrowzee. This Psychic-type knows Hypnosis, which has a chance of sending your Pokémon to sleep. If inflicted, you can cure sleep by using an Awakening item. Dark-types are ideal, but anything that’s not Poison or Fighting stands a chance.

It looks like it didn’t take much to drive Team Skull away. For your efforts, you’ll receive a Fresh Water. After this, you may notice the slope just above the BP shops is now accessible. Climb up the slop, then follow it around to the south to reach the hidden east side of the beach.

Follow the sand south-east towards the pair of palm trees. Search the left side of the bottom palm tree for a hidden Soda Pop. Uh, is this safe to drink? West from here is a trainer and her "Pyukumuku" IconPyukumuku. Like the "Rockruff" IconRockruff in Route 1, you can play with this Pyukumuku if you’re bored. Once you’re done, grab the White Herb in the far corner.

Now you may exit back to Route 2!
