Defeat enemies and you’ll earn experience (Exp), and get enough Exp and you’ll level up, earning a boost to your stats. But this isn’t the only way to increase your stats in Super Mario RPG, in fact, every time you level up you’ll be able to choose between three different bonus stats: Physical, HP and Magic, which will increase various statistical parameters if chosen. But which stats should you pick for which characters? This page will provide information on how bonus stat increases work and will provide advice on which bonus stats to pick when you level up.
Best Level Up Bonuses in Super Mario RPG¶
As mentioned earlier, you will get to choose between three bonus stats when you level up, as follows:
- Physical: Attack and Defense
- HP: Max HP
- Magic: Mg. Attack and Mg. Defense
As you can see, the Physical bonus boosts your Attack and Defense, the Magic bonus improves your Mg. Attack and Mg. Defense, and the HP bonus increases your Max HP, so if you want a character to be more of a fighter, pick Physical, if you want them to be more of a caster, pick Magic, and to keep them survivable, grab some HP, right? Well… sort of. It turns out the actual bonuses change as you level up, and if your goal is to get the best stat bonuses available you’ll need to switch what you pick every time you level up.
For example, when Mario hits Lv2 he’ll get the following bonus stat options:
- Physical: Attack +1 and Defense +1
- HP: Max HP +3
- Magic: Mg. Attack +3 and Mg. Attack +1
As you can see, you get far more Mg. Attack at Lv2 than Attack, making the Magic bonus stats more appealing. At Lv3, Mario’s bonus stats look like this:
- Physical: Attack +2 and Defense +1
- HP: Max HP +3
- Magic: Mg. Attack +1 and Mg. Attack +1
For this level, Mario’s Attack is slightly improved, making it more attractive than the other two options. Finally, at Lv4 Mario’s bonus stats look like this:
- Physical: Attack +1 and Defense +1
- HP: Max HP +4
- Magic: Mg. Attack +1 and Mg. Attack +1
Probably the weakest sell of the list, but Mario’s Max HP is increased here, while his Attack and Mg. Attack are both the standard, low bonus.
If you care more about maximizing your stats and making the most powerful - and by some metrics, arguably the “best” characters you can, you’ll switch between bonus stats every level up. These bonus stat variances follow a regular pattern, so to keep your stats maxed out you’ll just keep repeating the same process every three levels. The bonuses vary by character, but the core concept is the same in the end.
Below you’ll find tables showing the stat bonuses each character gets. These stat bonuses repeat until you reach max level (30).
Mario Bonus Stats by Level¶

Mallow Bonus Stats by Level¶

2 | Attack +1, Defense +1 | Max HP +4 | Mg. Attack +2, Mg. Defense +1 |
3 | Attack +3, Defense +1 | Max HP +4 | Mg. Attack +1, Mg. Defense +1 |
4 | Attack +1, Defense +1 | Max HP +6 | Mg. Attack +1, Mg. Defense +1 |
Geno Bonus Stats by Level¶
Level | Physical | HP | Magic |
---|---|---|---|
7 | Attack +1, Defense +1 | Max HP +6 | Mg. Attack +1, Mg. Defense +1 |
8 | Attack +3, Defense +1 | Max HP +5 | Mg. Attack +3, Mg. Defense +1 |
9 | Attack +1, Defense +1 | Max HP +5 | Mg. Attack +1, Mg. Defense +1 |
Bowser Bonus Stats by Level¶
Level | Physical | HP | Magic |
---|---|---|---|
9 | Attack +2, Defense +1 | Max HP +1 | Mg. Attack +1, Mg. Defense +1 |
10 | Attack +1, Defense +1 | Max HP +3 | Mg. Attack +1, Mg. Defense +1 |
11 | Attack +1, Defense +1 | Max HP +1 | Mg. Attack +3, Mg. Defense +1 |
Princess Peach Bonus Stats by Level¶
Level | Physical | HP | Magic |
---|---|---|---|
10 | Attack +1, Defense +1 | Max HP +9 | Mg. Attack +1, Mg. Defense +1 |
11 | Attack +1, Defense +1 | Max HP +5 | Mg. Attack +3, Mg. Defense +1 |
12 | Attack +3, Defense +1 | Max HP +5 | Mg. Attack +1, Mg. Defense +1 |
It’s pretty obvious what you should pick at each level if you want the best all-rounders in your party. That said, some characters might be better off specializing. Mallow and Peach both lean towards magic, and may be better off focusing on that. Bowers, meanwhile, only gains Max HP +3 on his “high HP” level, which is arguably not a worthwhile pick over Physical or Magic boosts, even at their lowest.
