Beetle Mania is a secret minigame that is easy to miss when playing Super Mario RPG. It can only be obtained if you visit the inn in the Mushroom Kingdom and talk to an NPC three times in a row after moving on from the Marrymore segment of the game. The guide below goes over where to find Beetle Mania and how the game is played.
How to Unlock Beetle Mania¶
You can get Beetle Mania after you finish up in the Marrymore section of the main story. Once this is done, return to the Mushroom Kingdom and head inside the inn. In the back right corner is a boy playing a Gameboy. Speak with him three times, and he will beat the game he is playing. At this point, he will offer to sell the system to the player for 500 coins. Buying it and then going into your menu unlocks a new minigame you can play anytime from the menu screen.
How to Play Beetle Mania¶
Beetle Mania is a Space Invaders clone that has you playing as a beetle. Your job is to shoot down red shells, and multiple will be on the screen at once. You can get hit three times before the game ends, and the high score set by the young boy is 5,000 points. To avoid the shells, you can move your beetle from side to side. Sometimes, hearts will show up that can give you an extra life when shot.
The shells will explode into stars when shot, and these stars will take out other shells, giving you more points. Be sure to shoot shells too close to the beetle, or you can be damaged by these stars. There is no reward for getting a high score in this game. It is purely a side activity.
