The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

Challenges

By
Vincent Lau

Challenges are a fun little distraction and add an extra layer to Shadow Link battles. Speak to Gramps or a Shadow Link to view the list of Challenges, including which ones you’ve completed.

The Challenges range from simple things such as “Win your first battle!” to slightly more tougher things like “Win without taking a single step!”. Most of the Challenges are self-explanatory and straightforward to accomplish, but we’ll give you some help for the more complicated ones.

When the Challenge reads “Use the hammer to deal the final blow!” or “Use the nice hammer to deal the final blow!”, you might think “Oh no, but what if I’ve upgraded the hammer into the nice hammer already? Can I not complete the first Challenge?” Worry not because if you beat a Shadow Link with the Nice Hammer, it will unlock the normal Hammer Challenge at the same time too.

“Super Lamp and Super Net? Where do you get those from?” we hear some people ask. You get these two items by beating the Advanced level of the Treacherous Tower mini-game twice.

Did somebody say “What’s a green apple?” You occasionally find these growing on the apple tree one screen left from Link’s House. You may need a good number of StreetPass tags before they appear. When one does appear, use the Pegasus Boots to knock it from the tree, then use the Net to catch it and place it inside a Bottle.

“How do you use Ravio’s bracelet if the arenas don’t have walls?” That’s a good question. In the sand arena, you can merge into the pillars of sand you make using the Sand Rod. Alternatively, cast the Ice Rod at the fire pillars in the fire arena and then merge into them when they’re solid.

“Can you really win without taking a single step?” somebody mutters. Just about! It’s easiest to do against a Shadow Link from the beginning of the game, ideally without a shield. Just use the sword spin or Great Spin (from returning 100 lost Maimais) repeatedly. Be warned that if the Shadow Link pokes their sword, you may bounce back slightly, rendering this Challenge a failure. We recommend saving before attempting, as it can be quite unpredictable.

“I can win without the X or Y buttons–just use your sword. But how do I win without the B button? I won’t be able to swing my sword!” is what we imagine a clever person may ask. Sadly this clever person forgot or didn’t realise there’s one more attack button–the L button for the Pegasus Boots dash. Simply slay a Shadow Link by dashing alone to secure this Challenge!
