Gotham Knights

How to Defeat Mr. Freeze - First Boss Fight

By
Nathan Garvin

This page will provide strategies for defeating Mr. Freeze during Case FR01: 1.4 - Gotham City on Ice in Gotham Knights.

During the fourth stage of Mr. Freeze’s case you’ll need to travel to the Elliot Center, where Mr. Freeze is putting his latest climate catastrophe into effect. Make your way through the various Regulator goons in your way until you reach the top of Elliot Center, where you’ll have to use the Disruptor you found in the last mission to… well, disrupt Freeze’s plan. Needless to say, Freeze won’t take your interference kindly.

(1 of 2) Melee attacks are viable, but you can probably only get a few attacks off due to Freeze’s AoEs and short period of downtime between attacks.

Preparing for Mr. Freeze

The fight with Mr. Freeze can be quite a difficulty spike - he’s the most durable and potent foe you’ll face until you’re late in the story. Since you can access his case file pretty early in the game and advance through it at will, you can quickly find yourself facing a boss you’re not really statistically capable of defeating. At least, not at any reasonable skill level.

Fortunately the RPG elements of Gotham Knights and its open-ended game design allows you to make this fight as easy or difficult as you want it to be. If you stumble through Freeze’s case file at a low level, without advancing the game’s main case files, you’re probably going to have a bad time. Case file “FR01: 1.4 - Gotham City on Ice” is capped at level 13, and this presumably also applies to Freeze. That being the case, you can simply outlevel Freeze, and the statistical advantage you’ll gain from leveling will have a significant impact on how difficult this boss battle is.

Then there’s the matter of your gear. If you advance the main case file you’ll have access to higher-tier gear, with epic-tier gear spawning after Case File 05 starts, and legendary-tier gear starting after Case File 06 starts. You can then complete premeditated crimes to obtain the blueprints and salvage required to craft this gear. If you go into the Freeze case file without advancing the main case file, you may be relegated to uncommon, rare, or the odd heroic-tier gear, which have decidedly lower stat caps, fewer mod slots and most likely no passive abilities.

Finally, the type of gear you bring to this fight matters quite a bit. It’s in his name, really - Mr. Freeze won’t be impressed if you bring cryogenic weapons to the fight. Try to farm yourself some relatively good incendiary damage weapons (especially a ranged option), and perhaps some cryogenic-resistant armor.

Between leveling, getting higher-tier gear, and bringing the right elements to the fight you can make this encounter with Mr. Freeze much, much easier. Batman’s superpower - besides being a billionaire with plot armor - was always the nebulous “prep time”, so his proteges should follow his example… even if the game otherwise doesn’t really require this level of consideration or preparation for most other foes.

(1 of 3) Freeze can use his cannon to shoot singular blasts,

Boss - Mr. Freeze

Assuming you followed the advice above, you should be more than ready to face off against Mr. Freeze. He’s not a quick foe, but his armor makes him quite durable, and his multiple cryogenic weapons can be rather dangerous. If you’re not capable of dealing 100+ damage per attack, this is going to take a while… long enough that you might want to consider beefing up a bit.

Fight him in melee can be tricky, as while his attacks aren’t fast, they do tend to have decent AoE, and you can likely only get a hit or two off before he retaliates. If you do go in for a melee strike, make sure it counts and focus on heavy attacks over numerous weaker strikes. Ranged attacks, however, can be landed with impunity, and Red Hood especially has an edge here. Don’t get greedy and keep an eye on Freeze, run to avoid whatever attack he launches your way and keep pelting him with ranged attacks.

Freeze’s attacks are as follows:

  • Cryogenic Shot: Freeze will charge up his cryogenic cannon and fire a blast of ice at you. He telegraphs this and it can be easily dodged by running laterally. Deals moderate damage and inflicts a significant amount of cryogenic buildup.

  • Cryogenic Sweep: Similar to the attack above, but Freeze will fire a sustained stream of ice at you, sweeping it slowly towards you. Again, you can outrun this, and the game even gives you an aiming reticle to let you know it’s coming.

  • Cryogenic Missiles: Freeze will hunker down and unleash a stream of missiles in a line - horizontal or vertical - at you. You’ll get an AoE indicator letting you know these are coming, so if you keep moving they shouldn’t hit you. They do, however, leave a patch of persistent ice on the ground that’ll damage you if you come into contact with it.

  • Frost Jump: After charging for a bit (leaving a visible AoE indicator around him while charging) Freeze will propel himself into the air in a blast of ice, landing heavily somewhere else on the battlefield. Keep your distance and you’ll be fine.

  • Melee Swipe: Freeze discourages hooded vigilantes with swings of his cryogenic cannon, used only when you’re in melee range.

All in all, Freeze himself isn’t too dangerous. Most of his attacks are easy to dodge and give you plenty of warning, just don’t get greedy and you’ll be fine. Deplete Freeze’s health to two-thirds, however, and you’ll get to see where this fight’s difficulty really comes from. Turns out it’s not from Freeze alone, but in conjunction with his now-destabilized device things can get quite dangerous.

(1 of 2) Freeze will charge up to perform an AoE frost jump, propelling himself away and dealing damage where he lands and where he jumped from.

Freeze will charge up to perform an AoE frost jump, propelling himself away and dealing damage where he lands and where he jumped from. (left), Every time around a third of Freeze’s health is reduced he’ll leap onto his machine, which will discharge beams of cryo energy - this is the most dangerous phase of the fight, and all you can do is run from the beams. (right)

Every time you knock off a third of Freeze’s health bar he’ll leap onto a platform on his machine, where he’ll remain impervious to damage until the following sequence ends. The destabilized machine - which previously dealt damage to you if you got too close, but otherwise wasn’t very interesting - now comes to life and starts making your life miserable. The main offensive output of this machine is to shoot four cryogenic streams which rotate across the battlefield. Your only viable option here is to run in the same direction as the streams, staying as far away from the machine as possible to give yourself ample time and space to avoid the freezing rays. If you get hit by these streams you’ll take hefty damage and will likely be frozen, and if that’s not bad enough, Mr. Freeze will also take the opportunity to pelt you with ice blasts - keep an eye for the AoE indicators on the ground to avoid them as best you can.

The first time Freeze does this, it’s not too bad; two sequences of cryogenic streams before and after an ice blast barrage. The second time, however (when Freeze is reduced to roughly one third of his health), these attack sequences aren’t as well-segregated, and you’ll find yourself having to avoid both attacks at once. If you can weather the second onslaught from Freeze’s machine, you should be able to finish the fight, just be prepared to use health packs if you’re not good at dodging.
