The new Patch 1 which was released for Sons of the Forest on 9th March 2023 introduced some new building features, one of the most significant of which is the Defensive Wall Gate. Unlike the new Door Lock template, it isn’t featured in the Field Guide, and it’s not immediately obvious how to construct it. We’ll show you how to build it on this page.
How to Construct the Defensive Wall Gate in Sons of the Forest¶
The most important thing that you need to make sure you do first, before you consider adding a Defensive Wall Gate to your structure, is creating a straight wall of at least four vertical logs. You can add this to an existing wall structure by pressing to remove specific logs from a wall, then replace them in a straight line. The way to determine a completely straight line in your wall is to connect the four logs with the snap function that you see when you hover a vertical log placement next to a log that has already been placed. You’ll see a white line pointing from the existing log when it snaps into the correct position.
Assuming you’ve got a straight line of vertical logs as part of your defensive wall structure, all you need to do now is grab another whole log (not a half log!) and look at the wall until you see the outline of a log placed diagonally over it. This is a preview of where the gate will be placed, but keep in mind that you can still remove this log once placed by pressing and holding , which will revert the gate back into the structure of a wall.
How to Build a Double Defensive Wall Gate¶
This should be all you need to know to experiment with creating defensive wall gates of your own, but it’s useful to know that you can actually place a double gate along a wall structure too. All you need to do for this is make sure that you have at least 10 logs placed in a straight line across a section of wall, then place a log diagonally across each set of 5 logs. The gate should then form in two parts, allowing you to open one side but not the other, or both at the same time. These can be great for keeping out most enemies and they’ll take a lot longer to destroy than the regular doors, but keep in mind that you’ll need to leave them open for your followers to get inside, since they can’t open and close them on their own!
