Sons of the Forest

How to Get the Rebreather in Sons of the Forest

By
Matt Chard

In Sons of the Forest, you will find various items and equipment to help you survive the forest, but many of them are well hidden, especially in the cave systems that The Forest is notorious for. One of these items you can find is the Rebreather, and you can find out where to get it, and what it does below.

The Rebreather allows you to stay underwater longer which is handy to explore caves with long stretches of water.

Rebreather Location

Like most essential items in The Forest games, you’ll find most equipment hidden in the depths of the caves, and this is no different. Depending on your spawn location, you may be right next to it! On the far north of the map is a large beach, and on this large beach is a cave.

This cave can be tricky to spot at first, but if you run to the shoreline, and follow the nearby rockface to the west, you’ll find it. If you’re still struggling to find it, get out your GPS (M-Key-Filled) and zoom in on it (MouseMiddleButton-Filled) to find its exact location.

You can also check where it is on our Interactive Map, right here.

(1 of 2) When you get near the shoreline of the northern beach, get out the GPS to find the cave.

When you get near the shoreline of the northern beach, get out the GPS to find the cave. (left), The entrance to the cave will be in the rock face, and it’ll be barricaded. Break down the barricade with a melee attack. (right)

When you find the cave, break down the wooden barricade by attacking it with a weapon, and enter it, but come prepared with some type of light source as it’s dark in there, very dark. Now that you’ve entered the cave, you’ll notice that the GPS has no signal in here, and it can be easy to get lost as there aren’t many landmarks in there, so make sure you follow our directions carefully. If you’re having trouble with the dark, equip your lighter with (L-Key-Filled) or get craft a torch (stick and a piece of cloth).

Proceed forward towards the floor light, and there will be some supplies for you to loot in the corner which will give you some flares, ammo, and an air tank. It’s good to use one of these whenever you reach an intersection, so it’s easier to know where you’ve been in case you make a wrong turn.

(1 of 2) Near the cave entrance you can find some flares and an air tank.

Continue onwards, past the floor light, and crouch under the low ceiling. There’s only one direction to go for now, so continue for now, and eventually, you’ll reach a slope leading into some water with a rubber dingy in it. Go through the water, past the floor light into the next area. In this area, you’ll have two ways to go, straight on, or to the right where the light is shining towards. Naturally, take the dark path straight on until you reach the end. You’ll know you’re in the right place as you’ll go through a shallow pool of water with life jackets, and rubber dinghies in it.

(1 of 3) You’re in the right place if you go through a shallow pool of water with life jackets in it.

Eventually, you’ll end up in an area that looks like a dead end, but if you head over to the right, you’ll find a small tunnel to go through. Continue right, and crouch through the narrow tunnel, and you’ll end up at another slope leading down into the water. DO NOT JUMP IN THE WATER! A large shark is swimming around in there, and you don’t want to become its food. Follow the slope down, and hug the right wall to the end, and you’ll find the Rebreather on a dead body with some flares to pick up nearby. To exit the cave, jump into the water, and head forward underwater until you see daylight.

(1 of 2) The Rebreather will be at the edge of the rocks near the water.

How to Use the Rebreather

Now that you’ve got the Rebreather, you’ll want to equip it to get out. Go into your inventory (I-Key-Filled) and move your mouse to the lower-right corner, and you’ll slowly turn around. The Rebreather can be found in the top-right corner of the black mat, and press MouseLeftButton-Filled to equip it.

(1 of 2) Place your mouse in the lower-right corner of the screen to turn around where you’ll find the Rebreather on the black mat.

Place your mouse in the lower-right corner of the screen to turn around where you’ll find the Rebreather on the black mat. (left), When you go underwater, you’ll get an oxygen gauge which will show you how much air you have left. (right)

When you jump into the water you’ll get the Oxygen gauge in the center of the screen. The marker will start on the right, and gradually turn to the left the longer you’re under the water as you’ll be using up the oxygen. This can be replenished by using an Air Tank which will sit next to the Rebreather in the inventory screen.
