Description

The Rathalos is the male counterpart to the Rathian. Like its female brethren, it can shoot fireballs from its mouth or cause poison, but with its talons rather than its tail. A key difference is that the Rathalos is more proficient in aerial combat and thus spends more time in the air.

Key Attacks

Fireball : The Rathalos pulls its head back, flaming at the jaw, and then launches either a single fireball straight at the hunter, or a volley of three - one forward, one to the left 45 degrees and another to the right at 45 degrees. the Rathalos may use this attack both on the ground and in the air.

Fireball Launch : The Rathalos blasts a fireball straight forward and launches himself back, up into the air.

Venom Claw : From the air the Rathalos may attempt to ‘scratch’ the hunter with its claws, clearly signalled by it putting its claws down, towards the hunter and flying slightly higher before coming in for an attack.

Air Charge : The Rathalos ‘slithers’ towards the hunter while in the air.

Charge : The Rathalos may simply charge forward, making its entire body a weapon.

Swoop : The Rathalos flies high, looking almost as if it’s left the arena, but will then circle the arena before swooping down to attack a hunter.

Recommended Strategy

When tackling a Rathalos you’re essentially fighting a Rathian with an expanded moveset, as such the same basic principles apply - stay close to its legs, but not under its body.

The Rathalos will take to the skies with greater frequency, however, and is significantly more dangerous when up there - it’s recommended that as well as constantly moving, you make some space between yourself and the Ratholos when it is flying in the sky in order to react to its expanded moveset.
