The Great Izuchi is a bipedal dinosaur-like monster that’s new to Monster Hunter Rise. It makes an appearance during the Urgent Quest, Great Izuchi, Great Pain.
Overview¶
For Monster Hunter beginners, the Great Izuchi is probably the first test of their skills. It’s not particularly strong or intelligent, but still a sizable hurdle when you’re getting to grips with the hunting gameplay.
The Great Izuchi’s primary weapon is its long and powerful tail. It can use this for a variety of attacks, including its strongest attack (you’ll know it when you see it). However, it can also use its claws and even spit from a distance.

Attack Patterns¶
Bite¶
A basic attack where the Great Izuchi lurches forward and tries to take a chunk out of its foe. There isn’t really a tell for this and it’s probably too fast to react. However, it can be avoided by staying to the Great Izuchi’s side when nothing else is going on.
Tail Slam¶
The Great Izuchi will jump back and do a short cry, before rolling forwards and slamming its tail straight down. You’ll want to roll or dodge out of the way, unless you want to get sent flying. After using this move, it will stay in position for a few seconds, so you can get some easy hits in.
Tail Spin¶
A rather annoying move where the Great Izuchi quickly spins its tail around 180 degrees. Before using this move, the Great Izuchi will crouch and make a noise. After the first tail spin, it generally does a second one. This time it will crouch down longer and does a small hop. Try to keep away when you see it crouching.
Spit Attack¶
There are two variations of this. The Great Izuchi can crane its neck upwards and then spit forward. Or it can leap backward, before doing the same thing. Either way, it’ll remain in place for a few moments afterwards.
Charging Attack¶
To catch you off guard, the Great Izuchi may bring its head downwards and make a shrill cry, before rushing forward a fair distance, while madly scratching with its claws. It won’t change direction, so you can avoid this by sidestepping or rolling to the side. Afterwards, it’ll briefly stop to catch its breath.
Triple Tail Spin¶
This is the big one. The Great Izuchi will leap backwards multiple times, scream upwards, then follow with three powerful spins in a forward direction. It will choose the direction right before spinning. To avoid this, get far away or use the wirebug to fly upwards or past it.
Strategy¶
In general, you want to get behind the Great Izuchi or stand to the side. This will allow you to avoid most attacks. The only one that can still hit you is the tail spin, so try to learn the tell for that (when it crouches down and makes a noise) so you can move away before getting slammed.
Good opportunities to whale on the monster are after moves like the tail slam or triple tail spin, when it spends time recovering. If you’re farming the Great Izuchi, focus on the tail to break it. We didn’t notice any difference after breaking it, but a “parts broken” prompt should display. Note that you can’t slice off the tail.
Otherwise, it’s not a complicated fight. Beginners should use this opportunity to practice their weapon and dodging. Especially dodging! If you’ve taken a lot of damage, fall back and look for a safe place to sip a potion. Likewise, if your weapon durability drops, find a really safe place to sharpen your weapon with your whetstone.
