Path of Exile 2

Reaching Clearfell - The Bloated Miller Boss Guide

By
Nathan Garvin

You’ll face many challenging bosses during your harrowing adventure, and Path of Exile 2 looks to set the tone and expectations as early as the game’s first boss. This page will provide strategies for defeating The Bloated Miller in Path of Exile 2.

Page Breakdown

The Bloated Miller Location

After a rather inauspicious beginning to your adventure you’ll find yourself conveyed - first by the whims of a weak rope and then the mercy of the tide - to the aptly named Riverbank area. Work your way through this towards the besieged Clearfell Encampment to run afoul of your first major foe - The Bloated Miller.

You will find The Bloated Miller besieging the Clearfell Encampment - to reach relative safety, you must vanquish this foe.

The Bloated Miller Strategy

The Bloated Miller isn’t incredibly difficult as far as bosses go, but there are extenuating factors at play - you’re not fighting him in a large, open arena, just a small rectangle of land outside the gates, and you’re stuck using whatever gear and skills you managed to scrape together on your journey thus far, which is to say, not much. Fortunately The Bloated Miller isn’t a dynamic foe, and as long as you demonstrate a grasp of the basics you should emerge victorious. The Bloated Miller will use the following attacks:

Charge

A shambling and somewhat pathetic charge attack, it’s slow and The Bloated Miller can only charge in a straight line. The only potentially “dangerous” bit about this attack is it doesn’t have a great tell or a lengthy buildup. Just dodge (or walk) out of the way to avoid damage.

Shockwave Slam

The Bloated Miller’s most dangerous attack, albeit basic boss fare. He’ll slam his massive weapon on the ground, creating a shockwave that shoots forward from the point of impact. This shockwave is a medium range rectangular attack that deals moderate damage, and you need to time your dodge reasonably well to avoid damage.

(1 of 3) One of The Bloated Miller’s attacks is perhaps the saddest charge attack in gaming - if you’ve the luxury of range, there’s little chance this should hit you.

Drowned Summon

The Bloated Miller will occasionally lurch forward, spilling forth a black miasma that causes the Drowned nearby to rise up and join him in combat. These are standard undead foes, capable of little more than shuffling towards you and performing the odd melee attack. Not dangerous in their own right, they can box you in, since you can’t dodge roll through enemies in this game, and if you get cornered by the Drowned you might not be able to avoid The Bloated Miller’s attacks as easily.

In addition to the aforementioned attacks, The Bloated Miller will spend his time ambling after you, seeking to perform the odd melee attack, either with his improvised weapon or by swiping with his meaty, rotten free arm. Use your most powerful attack on The Bloated Miller himself - you probably don’t have a lot of variety at this point - and note that ranged characters will likely have an easier time of things than melee characters (a trend that will persist). When The Bloated Miller summons his Drowned mob to harry, switch to an AoE attack if you have one to clear the field, at least enough so you’re not in danger of being boxed in.

(1 of 2) When The Bloated Miller is alone, pelt him with your strongest attacks to whittle down his health,

When The Bloated Miller is alone, pelt him with your strongest attacks to whittle down his health, (left), and switch to AoEs, if you have any, to clear the Drowned when they rise to prevent yourself from being boxed in. (right)

Whittle down The Bloated Miller’s health and he’ll drop some magical items when he falls, and better yet, leave open the way to the Clearfell Encampment.
