Path of Exile 2

Weapon Set Skill Points Explained

By
Ben Chard

For first time players of Path of Exile 2, the game can get confusing, very quickly, what with all of the different currencies and terms that it’s constantly throwing at you. While the game will give you explanations for some of the things you find or do, some are missing, and there’s nothing more confusing than trying to work out what Weapon Set Skill Points are once you get your first few. Keep reading to learn what they are, and how to put them to use.

Weapon Set Skill Points can be a confusing system, learn how they work here.

Unlocking and Finding Weapon Set Skill Points

As mentioned above, you’ll quickly come into contact with this system as soon as you reach the Hunting Grounds area of Act 1, so long as you’re taking the time out to kill the optional bosses scattered around these zones. The boss you’re looking for in particular is The Crowbell, a large beast that will run off constantly before resuming its assault on you. Once you defeat it, though, you’ll find an interesting drop with a green name, a Book of Specialisation and when used in your inventory, it will grant you two weapon set passive skill points.

It’s important to note that these are not extra skill points, but in fact a different way to spend your points (which we’ll go over below). In total, as of Early Access, there are around 16 weapon set passive skill points.

Certain bosses found in the campaign will drop Books of Specialisation that grants you weapon skill set points.

How to Use Weapon Set Skill Points

So, now that you have some of these weapon set skill points to play around with, how do you put them to use? Well, the game doesn’t give you any kind of tutorial on this, so it’s understandable to be a bit lost, especially as a newer player.

When you open up the Passive Skill Tree screen again, you’ll notice a new box in the top right of your screen that shows a points value for weapon set 1 and 2, denoted by the roman numerals for each set. It’s important to understand that these are not extra skill points, but a different way to split your earned skills points (from leveling up).

For example, say you’re playing as a Sorcerer who is focusing on perhaps two different elements, Fire and Ice. You may have found a weapon that boosts your Fire damage, and another that boosts your Ice, and have decided to place them into the two different weapon sets on your inventory screen. Now, when casting your Fire-based skills, passive skills points placed in nodes that buff Ice-based skills are of no value to you, this is where weapon set skill points come into use.

When selecting a node, so long as you have a regular skill point available and uses in either weapon set tree, you can hold down the button and choose to designate it to weapon set 1 or 2. If you look closely, this will slightly change the color of the line and will be brighter for the weapon set currently equipped. This system, then, essentially allows you to distribute a single skill point in two different positions, based on the weapon set that is active.

(1 of 2) You can see how many weapon set skill points you have to allocate in the top right corner.

There is a caveat with this though, unfortunately. If you’ve taken your skill points up one path in a specific set, you won’t be able to get the next one along unless it’s a weapon set skill point (forcing you to find more books if you’ve run out), your main track cannot continue along that path unless you put them in that same route (which defeats the purpose of this system). Essentially, this is a system that’s mainly intended for more advanced players make better use of their skill points, it’s entirely possible for newer players to ignore this until they get to grips with all of Path of Exile 2’s systems.

There you have it; you now know what weapon set skill points are, how to find them, and put to them to use, along with an explanation of the system at large. Now you can diversify your build to cover two different setups!
