Path of Exile 2

Sorrow Among Stones - Lachlann of Endless Lament Boss Guide

By
Nathan Garvin

Shortly after stepping foot into the Cemetery of the Eternals you’ll encounter one Lachlann the Lost, who seeks your aid against some Praetor. Since you came to this area to hunt for the signet ring of some long-dead count, helping Lachlann by raiding the tombs of his enemies isn’t exactly contrary to your goals - if you find Lachlann’s family while hunting for the signet right you seek, all the better. Once you’ve plundered the Mausoleum of the Praetor and the Tomb of the Consort you’ll have two halves of a key required to open a gate and reunite Lachlann with his family… such as it is. This page will provide strategies for defeating Lachlann of Eternal Lament in Path of Exile 2.

Page Breakdown

Lachlann of Eternal Lament Location

As mentioned above, you’ll need to plunder the Mausoleum of the Praetor and the Tomb of the Consort, in the process defeating both Draven, the Eternal Praetor and Asinia, the Praetor’s Consort to obtain Draven’s Memorial Key Piece and Asinia’s Memorial Key Piece, respectively. Once done, reunited with Lachlann and open the Memorial Gate in the Cemetery of the Eternals, and after a scene you’ll find yourself squaring off against Lachlann of Eternal Sorrow.

Lachlan Boss Strategy

You’ve got a fair amount of space to fight Lachlann of Eternal Lament and surprisingly few environmental hazards. What’s more, Lachlann of Eternal Lament summons no adds to the fight, which is rather unusual. So of course there’s a catch - Lachlann of Eternal Lament hits like an absolute truck and many of his attacks cover the ground in frost, dealing noteworthy damage over time as long as you stand in it. You’ve got room to move, but some of Lachlann of Eternal Lament’s attacks cover quite an area, and after a few attacks you may find around a third of the arena covered in damaging frost! What’s more, Lachlann of Eternal Lament is both a ranged and melee threat, although he is fairly lumbering. You likely won’t find many opportunities to face-tank this boss’s attacks unless you’re overpowered for this phase of the game, so hit and run tactics are going to be rather appealing here.

Below you’ll find a list of Lachlann of Eternal Lament’s attacks:

Swats and Sweeps

Lumbering and slow, Lachlann will pursue you around the cemetery, and if you’re lucky he’ll only punish you with a backhanded swat or mace swing when he catches you. These only deal moderate damage.

Mace Rampage

Not all of Lachlann’s mace attacks are mere love taps like the ones mentioned above. Lachlann can slam the ground in front of him with his mace, then turn and strike behind him for good measure. This deals considerable damage and doesn’t come with a lot of warning - range is your best friend here.

Groundbreaking Slam

Like the above attack, Lachlann will perform a massive overhead swing with his mace, slamming it into the ground. With this attack, however, there is no backwards reprisal, instead the ground will erupt in a wide cone effect, leaving frost in its wake.

(1 of 3) If you’re lucky, the worst you’ll suffer when Lachlann catches you is a half-hearted swat or mace swing,

Spirit Rush

While Lachlann won’t summon adds, he does have spirits he’ll conjure to assist him in various ways… ways that are usually detrimental to your wellbeing. These spirits serve as attacks, and one of these forms of wraith offensives is Lachlann’s Spirit Rush attack - he’ll draw spirits from the earth with his hand, creating a glowing green nova on the ground. This is your cue to be ready to dodge, as following this Lachlann will send a lance of the spirits at you, dealing massive damage if they connect. These spirits also leave a trail of frost along the ground as they travel, potentially creating a sizable hazard.

Spirit Summon

Lachlann of Eternal Lament will hold out his hand, glowing with unholy green energy, and the ground will obediently glow green under your feet. A pair of spirits will shortly thereafter spiral out of the ground and into the air before crashing back down, dealing heavy damage and leaving a patch of frost. Keep moving and you should avoid the initial summon, but if you don’t have a lot of run/walk speed you may have to dodge roll to avoid the descent.

(1 of 2) Lachlann might not have adds, but he’ll summon a trio of spirits to attack in a line,

Lachlann might not have adds, but he’ll summon a trio of spirits to attack in a line, (left), and will cause spirits to erupt out of the ground under your feet before slamming back down to the ground! (right)

Tunneling Spirits

Used later in the fight (usually starting when Lachlann’s health is below 75%), he’ll stomp the ground and send a shockwave burrowing towards you. You can see this disruption on the ground as it closes in on you, and it tracks. When the shockwave gets close enough, a spirit will erupt from the ground and spiral around in the general area, spreading frost behind it. Dodge this attack when the shockwave approaches - the spirit will still chase you a bit while it loops, but you can easily out run it.

As mentioned earlier, Lachlann hits hard, but this wouldn’t be much of a problem without the frost he leaves behind during many of his attacks. Lachlann’s stronger attacks will probably kill in two or three hits, but the frost will slow you down and sap your health, making you more likely to take those hits. Our best strategy was to simply be cautious and not overcommit. As a Sorceress we dealt most of our damage by creating a Flame Wall and shooting Sparks through it, flooding the battlefield, but this was less than ideal against Lachlann, as our attack took a bit of time and buildup to do. Instead, it was safer to use rangier, less committal attacks like Lightning Bolt, Ember Fusilade and, when there wasn’t much frost impeding a quick escape nearby, a Flame Wall + Freezing Shards combo.

For us, Lachlann of Eternal Lament was a test of patience - sometimes we had to forgo offense to simply get away from Lachlann and the frost his previous attacks left. Melee builds will likewise have to plan their attacks out a bit more than usual by approaching when the route to Lachlann is unobstructed by frost, landing what hits you may, and retreating after weathering an attack or two.

(1 of 3) Many of Lachlann’s attacks leave frost in their wake, slowing you down and making it more likely you’ll be hit by a mace or spirit attack,

Defeat Lachlann of Eternal Lament and he’ll drop Count Lachlann’s Ring - the signet ring you need for the quest The Mysterious Shade, along with other, random boss loot. Completing this quest yields and extra boon - you’ll be able to advance to the Hunting Grounds area and The Hooded One will now identify items for you for free!
