There are numerous types of currency in Path of Exile 2 and for a new player, this can be overwhelming. Fortunately, with time, this becomes easier as the currency systems is intuitive as they all tie in together.

Unlike most games, Path of Exile 2’s currencies act more like crafting materials than money, although there is a currency for that also. Expect to use these currencies to upgrade your gear, add modifiers to them, open up sockets on them, increasing their rarity, and much more. Shards

Ten to twenty shards are required to obtain an Orb of the same name. These predominantly come as a monster drop, or can be obtained by disenchanting or salvaging a piece of gear.

Orbs

Orbs can be found as a drop as well as fusing 10 shards of the same name together to create one. These have a variety of uses such as upgrading gear, adding modifiers, adding sockets, and much more.

Essences

Essences are a primary currency similar to the various types of Transmutation Orbs with the difference being that it’ll add a modifier to it based on the essence used. For example, adding an Essence of Flames to an item will give it either a resistance to fire if placed on a piece of armor or a fire attack to a weapon. The regular essences will upgrade a normal item to a magic item while the greater essences will increase it to the rare quality.

You can obtain the regular essences throughout the main game by searching the map for a group of enemies that appear to be frozen in time, and when interacted with, they’ll spawn a group of enemies including a difficult rare enemy with three modifiers. Upon defeat, they’ll drop a few essences if you’re lucky. These can be difficult to find in a regular map, and you may need to adjust your atlas strategy for them to appear.

Distilled Emotions

Distilled Emotions are a crafting material that apply notable passive skills to your amulets. You can acquire these by participating in Delirium events which are timed events where a mist will envelop the area, spawning strong and powerful enemies.

You can access the event by entering a Delirium Mirror that randomly appears in a map. The event will have a short timer, and you must defeat as many enemies as possible within the time limit to increase the amount of rewards you get, which include Distilled Emotions.

Catalysts

Catalysts are a currency used to increase the quality of your rings and amulets. These are obtained by participating the Breach event endgame activity. Breaches are a rift between a world of demons and Wraeclast, and where the rift spawns, is where you’ll need to battle waves of difficult enemies.

Defeating enemies quickly will lead to more waves of enemies, and better loot. Catalysts are one of the rewards from this event.

Omens

Omens are powerful items that modify the way your regular crafting currency affects items or give you an affect that will stay on you provided it is activated in your inventory. For example, having the Omen of Amelioration activated will reduce the amount of experience you lose by 75%, or by having the Omen of Corruption activated, your next vaal orb that you use will be less unpredictable.

You can acquire Omens by participating in Ritual events that appear in maps. These are accessed by defeating and sacrificing enemies near the Ritual Altars. These fill up the altars allowing you to interact with them to spawn sacrificed enemies. Defeating these will reward you with tributes that can be spent in the Favor Shop, accessed by interacting with the completed altar, and that is where you’ll find Omens among other loot.
