A Cage for Gods

Nathan Garvin

Your efforts on Tearstone Island yielded results, dealing a grievous blow to the gods, but not without great cost. In addition, a long-awaited betrayal finally took place, leaving Rook trapped in a prison to wrestle with their failures and regret. Work through your doubt, come to terms with a devastating revelation, and escape this prison so you can finish the fight! This page will provide a walkthrough for the quest A Cage for Gods in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Page Breakdown

Starting A Cage for Gods

This quest will begin automatically after completing the main quest Isle of the Gods, and unlike most quests there’s no idle time between the two quests - cutscenes will transition you from one quest to the next seamlessly.

Loot the Prison Chest

When you’re in control of Rook - and just Rook - again, you’ll be in an area descriptively called “Somewhere in the Fade”, in the desaturated ruins where you met with Solas in your dreams. Save this time you’re on the wrong side of the rift. You’ve somehow got to escape a prison that contained a crafty god, and you’ve got to do so quickly… storywise, anyways. Gameplaywise, there’s no real time limit.

Head upstairs to the north, then turn northwest to spot a chest surrounded by three motes of light. Make a note of it, as getting this chest open is something we’ll want to do. There are multiple paths you can take from here, two paths to the east (one north, one south), a path to the west, and another to the northwest. Taking the northeastern path will fastrack your escape, but if you want this chest you’ll need to explore the three other paths, first.

Find a chest in the prison, which is sealed by motes of light.

Western Path

Go up the northwestern path and approach a gap to trigger two boulders to spawn, which you can leap over. Once done, press on until you find a wolf statue at the end of the path. Grab the Remnant of Failure from the ground (+200 Caretaker Power) and return to the chest to find that one of the motes of light are gone. Looks like you’re going to have to deal with Solas’s regrets before you tackle your own if you want to get this chest open.

(1 of 3) Explore the side paths and approach gaps to compel boulders to spawn.

Northwestern Path

Take some stairs down along the northwestern path, which actually runs north and east, but the start of it is northwest of the chest. Once again you’ll need to approach a gap and use a pair of boulders to cross - they’ll spawn as you get close. Grab the Remnant of Reflection (+200 Caretaker Power) from near another wolf statue, then backtrack and confirm that the second mote of light near the chest is gone. Two down, one to go.

Southeastern Path

Backtrack to where you appeared in this prison and from there head east and north, up and down stairs until you find the Remnant of Parting (+200 Caretaker Power) near another statue.

Return to the chest and now that all the lights surrounding it have been snuffed out, you can open it. Do so to claim a haul of runes, including the Displace rune, "Storm" iconStorm rune and Rampart rune as well as the "Arlathan's Fall" iconArlathan’s Fall cosmetic.

(1 of 3) Get the Remnant of Reflection from the northwestern path,

Escape the Prison

Now that you’ve plundered the prison chest, it’s time to skedaddle. Approach the northern of the two eastern paths and as you approach you’ll hear Varric’s voice, and a staircase will appear, providing you egress. Go up the stairs and follow the linear path ahead, where you’ll hear a lot of chatter.Varric, of course, is present, but you’ll also hear from the person you chose to deal with the wards and the person you chose to lead B-team. You’ll eventually encounter statues of the three friends you’ve failed (Varric being last), and your dialog options don’t really matter here - whatever you say, Rook will rationalize her choices and deny distortions of the truth. This is mostly a referendum on your past choices - who you picked during Isle of the Gods and how you treated them beforehand (read: if you completed their companion quests, if you abandoned Minrathous) will change the dialog.

(1 of 3) Along the northeastern path you’ll be tormented by your failures,

After dealing with your lost companions, return to Solas’s ritual site for a final revelation. After the scenes, this quest will end. There will be a lot of chatter afterwards, and when it’s over the quest The Dragon and the Dreadwolf will begin.
