Information regarding Mama Murphy’s requests, including what chems to give her in exchange for use of her “sight”, the consequences of over-medicating her, and how to build Mama Murphy’s Chair.
After making Sanctuary livable for your new allies, you might as well see to some requests Mama Murphy has. Doing so will get you some information about the main questline and more immediately useful, some XP.
Mama Murphy’s Request: Jet¶
First, make sure you have some Jet, a chem that dilates time - very useful in combat. You can find Jet throughout the wasteland, being fairly common in Chem Boxes strewn about the wasteland. Once you have at least one dose, talk to Mama Murphy and she’ll ask for some, supposedly to aid her “sight”, promising you information regarding your son in exchange. Give her a dose of Jet and she’ll deliver on her promise, telling you to seek out a “bright heart” in Diamond City, who will lead you to your boy.
Objective | Reward |

For giving Mama Murphy Jet | 92 XP |
Mama Murphy’s Chair¶
Talk to Mama Murphy again and she’ll ask you for another favor. All this drug abuse has her a bit tuckered out, and she needs a good sit. Not a normal sit, however, she needs a chair crafted with love to soothe her aching bones. In your crafting settlement crafting menu you’ll now have the “Special” category, with only one item available - Mama Murphy’s Chair. Building this will set you back 4x Wood, 3x Cloth and 1x Steel, all of which are common resources you should have no trouble finding. Build it for another decent XP reward, after which Mama Murphy will sit down in her designated char.
Objective | Reward |

For building Mama Murphy’s Chair | 92 XP |
Mama Murphy’s Request: Mentats¶
A few in-game days after building her chair and satisfying her first craving, you can talk to Mama Murphy again and she’ll ask you to fetch her another chem - this time Mentats. Like Jet, it’s common enough throughout the wasteland that finding some shouldn’t be too difficult. Feed Mama Murphy’s craving and she’ll tell you to look out for “a man you don’t expect”, surrounded by people with “cruel intentions”, and advise you to tell the “fat man and angry woman” to “Remember the Quarry and Lilly June on the rocks”. That last bit is… pretty specific.
And that’s that. A few simple requests worth more XP than their difficulty entails. Sometimes games spoil us a bit.
Anywho, time to explore the northwestern corner of the map, mostly to ensure we cover whatever settlement Preston sends us to help as part of The First Step. Details about this lengthy expedition can be found on the page Exploration Overview, after which each area will be covered on their own pages.
