Where to Find The Stand of the Sentinels Tallneck¶
The Tallneck: The Stand of the Sentinels can be found along the northwestern edge of the map, in a forested area surrounded by mountains to the north and east, with the ocean lying to the west. To access this area you must complete the main quest The Eye of the Earth, which will grant you access to the western half of the Forbidden West. You can start the activity merely by approaching the location the Tallneck wanders.
How to Reach the Abandoned Settlement¶
When you approach the area the Tallneck wanders the activity should start and you’ll be given the rather open-ended objective to Climb up the Abandoned Settlement. This is both more and less complicated than it may initially seem.
If you simply go wandering around the forested area inside the trail created by the Tallneck’s eternal wandering, you’ll find numerous large trees with platforms built atop them. Getting up there isn’t as simple as you may expect (and in some respects, simpler than you may fear) - there are vast stretches of blight in the forest under these elevated settlement platforms, and the area is patrolled by several [Stalkers], feline-like machines with cloaking capabilities that come armed with a Dart Gun and a Mine Launcher. Nasty critters, best fought individually or with great caution, if not outright avoided.
You can follow a trail northeast through the center of the blight-infested forest under the elevated village, stopping to loot a cache for the [Heartshatter Spike Thrower], among other loot, and ultimately reaching a collapsed bridge. While the bridge might not directly connect to the elevated settlement, it does lead to a grapple point that’ll get you up there. Once you reach this settlement platform in the middle of the Tallneck’s range you’ll discover that getting on some of the settlement platforms doesn’t mean you can access all of them, as they’re not all connected, and in this case, you’ll need to seek out another route to the Tallneck.
If you don’t mind fighting Stalkers, search the northern end of the area inside the Tallneck’s track to find a large collapsed tree trunk between a settlement platform to the west and an elevated bridge to the east. Climb atop this fallen trunk, then jump onto a massive stump to the southwest. If you look southwest at the tree the settlement platform is suspended on you should spot some handholds you can jump onto. From this vantage you just need to climb up to the settlement platform above, leaping across to various supports as you go.
Should you find the Stalkers and the platforming too much of a bother, there’s another solution: Glide. This forested settlement is surrounded by mountains, and you can use those heights to your advantage. If you climb the mountains to the west towards the settlement of Cliffwatch you can find a Shelter, which is to the southwest of Cliffwatch. From this vantage you can jump and glide over to the abandoned settlement - if you’re lucky or your timing is good, you can even try to land on the Tallneck itself!
How to Climb the Tallneck¶
Once you’re on one of the settlement platforms, you need to wait for the Tallneck itself to walk past your location, then jump on it. It’s got numerous Antenna you can climb on, but there’s no path up from the lower two. Instead, you’ll need to ride on the Tallneck until it passes a grapple point on another settlement platform (along the northeastern edge of the abandoned settlement and grapple up there. These platforms are protected by two [Fire Clamberjaws], and after you deal with them you’ll need to shoot down a ladder, climb it, ride a zipline south, then climb up to the upper part of some of the eastern settlement platforms, which are high enough to reach the upper parts of the Tallneck as it passes.
…or, again, you can just glide from the aforementioned Shelter in the mountains and land on one of these eastern platforms and save yourself a whole lot of trouble.
Either way, once you make it atop the Tallneck, override it to complete this activity and unveil another huge swathe of map.
