Substories are the wackier stories in the Like A Dragon series, to offshoot the more serious tone of the main story. You will first unlock the ability to do Substories in Chapter 2, although they aren’t shown on your map, so you will need to fully explore each map to find them. This page will give a walkthrough of the Diplomacy in Darkness substory, found in Fushimi.
Where to Start Diplomacy in Darkness in Like a Dragon: Ishin¶
It will be a while before you can do this Substory, since it’s related to Substory 70 - The Captain and the Curious. First, you need to finish that Substory, then you need to start collecting the Memoirs that Satow wants you to hunt down. Specifically, you need to get around 80% of the Memoirs, and you can keep track of that percentage by going to your main menu and down to Bakumatsu Archives, where it should show the percentage to the right. Once you have reached that threshold, make sure you completely exit Fushimi (if you were there), then return to the initial izakaya where you first met Satow. As you approach the place, a cutscene will trigger that begins this Substory.
Where to Find Satow in Diplomacy in Darkness¶
It seems that some people kidnapped Satow and took him over to Mukurogai. Head on over there, either by taking the boatman in Fushimi, or passing through the northern gate in Rakugai. However you do it, you will be heading over to the eastern side of Mukurogai, by the Cannon Coach NPC. There, you will see Mr. Satow being held hostage, and will learn a little bit of truth about his background. This will eventually lead to a fight against some enemies, including a miniboss, of sorts.
The arena here isn’t exactly large, so you will need to act quick to take out the normal enemies first. Of course, Tanaka Shinbei, the tougher enemy here, will take pot shots at you while you’re focusing on the normal enemies. As far as he is concerned, he is fairly normal in terms of attacks, so just treat him as a more challenging normal enemy. You can choose whichever style you want, although Wild Dancer is great for the beginning, since that is more suited for multiple enemies, then you can switch over to Swordsman for the one-on-one with Shinbei.
After the battle is over, you will hear about Satow’s little secret and he tells you that he’d never actually do anything to hurt Japan. His time in Japan has been very pleasant and he wants to protect it at all costs. He will then return to his normal spot at the izakaya in Fushimi, ending the Substory.
